Where can I find some info on Porsche colors and distributors of paint. My original color is signal orange (71 914). My wife has requested I paint it any color but orange. Her choice is Red, Yellow or white. I really dont have any preferance. Can anybody give me some tid bits of wisdom on paint. I did not find a tech article on paint.

Are you sure you want to change the car color, or might it make more sense to sell the ’71 signal orange and buy a new 914 in a color you like? Just something to consider...

I know that I have said it before, but repainting your car a different color is an expensive and daunting task to do right. No matter what you do, you will see that orange again when you get your first scratch!
I hate to recommend it, but there is a very complete color chart on the AA site. ------------------ Herb '72 1.7 Tangerine 'Teen '74 2.0 Red Rustmobile |

color changes are difficult and expensive (time consuming) to do properly. Plus, most folks agree that they significantly decrease the value of an otherwise original car. For a wild custom project car, or a race car, not nearly as big a deal.
If you decide to go ahead with the color change, it may be better to go to a "close" color such as yellow or red. Trying to paint an orange car white could be a challenge. There will always be little stripes and spots of orange visible. ------------------ Chris C. 73 914 2.0 70 911E Targa campbell.chris@gte.net |

The car was already resprayed in a kelly green in 1975. The car is now completly apart-- everything. So a color change really isnt that big of deal. I was looking on AA for the color charts and I did not find them. Do we have any painters that can shed some light on paint systems.

There is a link that has all the 914 colors on a chart. I have lost that link, help anyone??
My car is orange too, can't say it's my favorite color but it is visible in traffic! And very retro...look at the colors they are painting new cars. Geoff ------------------ 76 914 2.0L |

I am in the process of a color change, although half the car is already the new color. Are you going to paint yourself? I am in the process of doing mine. Definately reccomend a single stage urethane or a base coat/clear coat urethane. The urethanes really hold up well, very forging to spray, and lots of gloss. If you get the Porsche code for what color you like, any supplier can mix it.
For tons of info on body/paint, check out www.autobodystore.com, particularly the discusion forum. ------------------ Joe 74 Yellow 1.8L 914 72 Tangerine NoL 914 http://pages.sssnet.com/jkaull |

just about any professional auto paint store will have the books that show all of the color paints for 914s, with paint chips. They never throw that stuff out.

Yes, I do plan on painting myself. My 914 is a project car everything all at once ie. ground up restore and a 914-4 to 914-6 to boot.( yes, I always bite off more than I can chew!) and I plan on doing everything I can. I have already done the undercoating and now looking to paint just the interior body and inside trunks, so I can start to put things back together. I guess I better figure out painting and pick a color. The paint chart posted above really helps.

I am looking to purchase my first 914 soon (73 or 74 2.0). Based on some of the comments it sounds like I should wait for a car with my color of choice.
How much does a quality paint job cost? |

vjwray - there are a lot of variables, including (a) how much of the work you will do yourself vs. having the body shop do, (b) will you strip the car to bare metal or not, (c) is there any bodywork or rust-oration necessary, (d) what kind of paint and other materials you use, (e) how quickly you want it done...etc
It is certainly not unheard of to spend 200 hours on a quality job (my 911 was in the shop for 3 months, and yes, they worked on it more days than not during that time). Multiply that by your favorite hourly rate, add a few hundred bucks for paint materials and you're talking real money. Oh yeah - do you plan to replace the rubber seals? The bright/anodized trim? The windshield? If so, tack on another grand or so. OR, buy a car you like, where somebody else has already done the above work -- their loss is your gain! My body shop Hal's in Woodland Hills Charges $1800 to paint a Striped 914 the same color, without body damage. I supply the paint and I do the final color sanding and assembley.
Rather than buy a car and change the color or repaint it find one that is in the color you like hopefully with Original paint.Steve |

I would recommend using one of the two stage paints such as Dupont or other brand as the paint will hold up to the sun and fading very well. I had both our 914s painted two years ago and so far no fading at all.

Thanks for the feedback about paint work and costs. Very helpful.
I'll wait until a prefered color comes along. [This message has been edited by vjwray (edited 05-26-2001).] [This message has been edited by vjwray (edited 05-26-2001).] |

Steve, the color preferences are dark blue, dark green, dark shades of other colors are good. White is good, or a rich yellow.
Colors I am staying a way from are black, light red, and orange. |

What's the problem with orange?
I believe that these little cars are better served with bright colors. Too many soccer moms in Excursions have trouble seeing small a dark spot on the rear view mirror. (I know, I'm a sexist bastard.) Though I have to admit, they look great in Arctic silver! ------------------ Herb '72 1.7 Tangerine 'Teen '74 2.0 Red Rustmobile |

Can anybody show me a 914 color chart that shows a color code L-98B for a 76. It is some shade of green under the existing grey primer coat.
