Question Heat Exchangers -- 73-74 2.0L Questions

Newbie questions here...

1. Could somebody tell me how one can tell at a glance if heat exchangers are stainless steel or not?

2. The heat exchangers that I've removed from a 914 I'm parting out are slightly different length (see picture, left side)... is this correct?

Thanks in advance.

Andrew

Yes, they should be slightly different in length due to the positioning of the exhaust outlet on the heads. The pistons are not exactly opposite of each other. Instead, one side is about two inches or so offset from center of piston to center of piston.

Oh, and those are stainless steel heat exchangers. Keep them!

Basically at a glance, you look to see if there is any surface rus and if there are any somewhat shiny spots. Yours, believe it or not, are not rusted, just have lots of oil and dirt cooked onto them. You might be able to polish them out to look a lot better, but I personally wouldn't because it will end up just like it is now eventually.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the quick response, Paul.

I just pulled these off my 914 that I'm parting. Unfortunately, I spent the big bucks already on another set of new SS exchangers for my daily driver 914, so I really don't have much need for these now... sigh... wish I pulled these off sooner, but I decided to part this car out after installing the new exchangers.

Um, anyone interested in buying these? Or shall I post on evil-bay?
