Engine Rebuild Lubes
Hi All..
I am about to rebuild (or build) my T.4 for the first time.. Its and EC block w/ 2.0 heads and jugs, fuel via 44mm Webers and a Webcam to give it a little more ummph.. Webcam sent me some cam lube for the cam, but i'd like to pole you all on what other lubes, greases or sealants are recommended for the sealing case, heads, bearings, yada, yada... Any and all help/advice greatly appreciated.. Thanks Chris |
Stuff I used was white grease, lithium grease, some kind of really thick red oil that I think was called engine assembly lube...go to NAPA or Auto Zone and ask the guy behind the counter...generally they can point you in the right direction.

There are specific engine assembly lubes. Use them. Some are red, some are black, some may even be purple for all I know...
As for case seam sealers, I've heard very good things about Hondabond and Yamabond, two sealants made for air-cooled motorcycles. Bruce Anderson recommends some specific Dow-Corning product in his 911 book. And there are other products that should work too, but I don't recall what they are offhand. --DD |

I recommend using 20wt engine oil, mixed with a tad bit of STP oil treatment..I do not use the assembly lubes, they give an artificial feel to the engine during assembly, and may cause some problems when checking tolerances...
I seal every case I build with Curil k2, and a little something from the medicine cabinet.......take a guess at what it is |

Nope, it is not a lubricant, is a sealant...I place it between the case halves, all the way around...Give up, you will never guess it...LOL LOL>

jake, Please don't say it's Dentucreme. Thats a sealant/adhesive, I guess.
It's either that or Preparation H. Personally I like the feel of STP and 30wt Castrol for the assembly. As for the case halves, I agree with most aircooled afficionados....Curil K2. Have an Awesome Weekend All! John ------------------ 72'914 |

I think i am going to opt for the Castrol straight 30w and the STP.. As for Seam sealer, I've been advised that the current stock VW orange goo (supposedly same as MB and Porsche factory sealer) is the way to go.. #AMV 188 200 03.. now.. for engine break-in, straight Castrol 30 or Kendall 20w-50? and milage? 1k? USe Kendall 20 W 50, for break in..The cam will love you for it..

Since nobody asked me...
Having ruled out both toothpaste and roll-on deodorant for sealing the case halves, I'm thinking Jake uses dental floss for this purpose. Embedded in the Curil, it would compress and act as a physical barrier. But I could be wrong. |

Just make sure it is waxed!!!
It works great, good guess DJS.. Thats my secret, keep it to yourselves.. Before anyone says that it affects case torque, or crush factors, it is less than .001 thick when compressed, curil alone is .001 and many sealants are twice that thick.. I have used it with no sealant, at all, and it worked like a champ.. |
