Muffler heat shield question

Was the stock muffler heat shield painted black? I have switch to a stock muffler and I'm getting a lot of heat transfer into the trunk. I'm wondering it the heat shield should be reflective in color.

Thanks,

My bursche heats up the trunk aswell. My shield is painted the same color as the car. (original?) I am going to be putting some of that aluminum firewall heat reflective stuff on it after I build a new motor. That is probably the best bet. The big question is why is the exhaust so hot? Is it suppost to be that hot? I think not. I know my motor was not tuned well enough.
