Testing Bilsteins??
 

I just got (finally) my 914. It's a 72 2.0 and I believe a special edition. Thats the good news, the bad news is that it has'nt been run for over 15 years. It has the original Bilstein shocks. How can I test them, and is there a way to rebuild?

Hi there. Hope I don't diappoint you, but the Limited Edition models were only produced in 1974, and I don't think that any 914s shipped with Bilsteins on them, although rumour has it that they were optional at the time. So, they are probably not the original shocks on there.

Bilsteins, if that is what is on there, usually last a very long time. The best way to test them is to just drive the car, and see how they feel.

Sorry for the typo above ... it is a 74' not a 72'

Bilstein America, located in San Diego, will test and rebuild their shocks. The PCA San Diego reigon had a tech session there last month and that was the info they put out. Revalving was something like 75$ per shock, so it may be better to just buy new ones, but then they would not be original would they?
