yes...911 tanks are too big to fit between the outer fender and the engine compartment wall. If you look on the drivers side engine wall you'll see the indents where you need to drill out the holes for a factory tank. There are also aftermarket tanks...look in the resources section on the 914club and look for DWDesign. I'm in the same boat right now, I'm looking for a 914-6 oil tank and not sure if I want original or aftermarket.

DWDesign is a friend of mine, and I'm shamelessly pimping him here, but his tanks are really nice.
I have one here for the day when I find the right deal on a 6 for my car.

If you don't need the original look, you can install a dry sump tank(Peterson) in the front. They're a lot less expensive (ebay, Jeggs any race mag).

I used the Vellios cast aluminum tank. No leaks.
Fits in the stock location.

High volume and good heat disipation.

If it's going to be a street car, make life easy on yourself and get a factory style tank. The hookups will be easier and the hose lengths much shorter unless you're running a front cooler. The parts are available, so just look and see who has the best deal at the time.

I know he was going to be making filler necks, etc. Are they
available yet? I have a beautiful dwd tank, and am slowly
getting closer to needing a filter console and filler neck/dipstick.

I'd make sure to check that any aftermarket tank has the correct baffling inside, FYI, BTDT

How does someone check for proper baffling?

the DWDesign tank has been talked about extensively on the 914club.com site (well, the before the blowup site)...they copied the inside baffling of the factory tank.

Call Sunset Imports. Ask for Jeff at Porsche Parts. Tell him I sent you....You will get an OEM tank cheaper than an aftermarket tank.

Hey guys,

The first thing I aquired when I started was a rusted out OEM 914-6 tank. I cut it open and from that point, everything in my tank was to be identical (except for materials). The screen is the same wire size and mesh count in stainless; it is critical to have the same mesh size because it helps keep the oil foaming to a minimum. I went with 5052 aluminum sheet because of its great machining/welding/bending properties (it is used extensively in the airplane industry for fuel/oil/liquid cells), and heat dissipation. However, I have changed one thing. When the oil from the engine enters the tank, it goes through internal plumbing to the oil filter stand, through the filter, then back in the tank to another tube which goes to the top of the tank and dumps the oil from a high position above the oil filter position. The hot oil then gravity feeds down to the oil out fitting then back to the motor. With my tank, I plumbed that oil line to the back of the tank to help dissipate heat to make for cooler oil temps.

Patrick, the filler necks won't be ready till late January... I'm waiting for the CNC lathe to finish oil tank and coil-over parts. I will snap some pictures of what I have done and what they will look like. I also have early OEM style dipsticks being made out of stainless spring steel.

Thanks

Your tank is a work of art, and almost a shame to have to
hide it behind the body work.

Hey guys,

Here are some pics of the filler necks I have so far. The first pic is an example of what the cap will look like. I'm going to use a double start acme thread, very strong and dirt/grime won't mess up the threads.

The filler necks are stainless and aluminum. The base and dip stick tube (section which mates to the tank) are stainless. I incorperated a screen plate on the back side so now everyone can have a peice of warm fuzzy security knowing that if you drop something in the filler neck, it won't go too far. The main body and cap will be out of 6061 aluminum and grey anodyzed. They are then press fit together and ready for purchase.

Since a new tank is being built, I hope the fitting on the bottom of the tank that feeds oil to the motor is at least an AN-16 size. Maybe AN-20 would be best

The DWD tank is an OEM copy designed to work with all of the Porsche 914-6 OEM parts. BUT... If there is enough demand, I will pull asside 10-15 tanks and build a race version utilizing more advanced baffling, more volume, larger AN fittings, integraded cooling fins and anyother ideas.

Cheers, and happy holidays. Don.
