Speedometer fault detected!

Thanks everyone for your advice on my speedometer troubleshooting. After driving the cable w/a variable-speed drill w/the gauge attached & unattached, it seems as though the gauge itself is the culprit.

My car is a '71 & the gauge is a 150mph gauge. I think the 120mph gauge is the correct one for the car & I'm considering buying one. Couple of questions:

1. Am I right about the gauge/model year?
2. Can the new odometer be set to reflect the total mileage on the old odometer?

Thanks,

Mark

before you give up on the spedo did you try reverse on the drill and or put a flat head screw driver bit in the drill and stick it in the spedo to check it with out the cable

You are correct. The '71 should have the 120 mph speedo.

And yes, you can set the odo numbers to whatever you want but you have to take the speedo apart to do it (I zero'd mine out when I rebuilt it.) Though, if you have other than the original speedo, doesn't it follow that what the 150 mph speedo says is incorrect anyway?

Scott,

Thanks for the tip. In fact I didn't try reverse on the drill; I'll give it a shot before I pony up the $$$.

Herb,

You are absolutely right. The reading on the current odo may or may not be the actual mileage of the vehicle. I don't know any way to confirm it one way or the other; in this state (Idaho) odometer readings on title/registration are not required for vehicles 10 years or older.
