How to Remove Driver Side Seat Belt?

Hmm...how does one remove the driver side retractable seat belt in a '73 914?

One must remove the backpad from the firewall. Unscrew the engine pull knob and the plastic "escutcheon" around the cable. Remove the four screws near the bottom of the pad, then slide the bottom forward so the top can move down. That will unhook the top of the pad from the firewall and you can get it out of the way.

The retractor is held on with one bolt, as is the upper loop. The bottom of the belt is likewise held in with one bolt, and so is the reciever. Take note of the order and location of the metal and plastic washers and such, as you'll want to get everything back correctly when you put it together again. And the pics in Haynes and the Factory manual are not completely helpful there...

Thanks Dave. After opening the engine compartment, looks like the head of the bolt that secures the retractor is accessible from the engine compartment? I see the bolt on the far driver's side of the engine firewall insulation pad and it is directly behind the location of the retractor.

I don't recall seeing one in there... When I removed mine, it was all done from the cockpit.
