I did something now it is missing a cylinder.

Last night I changed the oil and while waiting for it to drain I thought I would clean the points a bit in the distributor cap.

When I started up again it was not firing on one or more cylinders.

I did notice that the braid in the distributor seems to be worn through. If this was the case should it not fire at all or could this cause one cylinder not to fire and the others to work fine?

I just fited a new distributor cap and rotor but it had no effect.

In an earlier post DD said all you need to do is replace the points plate if your braid is broken. I looked in the PP catalogue but can't find one. Where can I get one?

Just call PP 888-280-7799
The take phone calls just as well as e-mails. I would bet they've got it.

Call up and order one. Just because it isn't in the catalog doesn't mean we don't carry it.

The engine can fire sometimes with no ground braid, as the energy going into the points will sometimes find its own ground path. But that is not very reliable, so you don't always get a spark.

If the braid is broken, then pull the distributor, take it apart far enough to replace the plate, re-assemble, and try starting the car again.
