Post Upon first startup my cars dies then runs fine. . .

76 914 2.0, all stock FI.

If the car sits for 5 hours or more, when first starting up it idles for 3 seconds then dies. Restart results in perfect running and no problems. Any ideas?

Does the AAR valve work? The car should have a idle rpm of around 1500 after starting. You could also have the hoses switched around so the AAR valve doesn't work.

Could be a fuel supply problem. The check valve in the fuel pump is supposed to keep fuel in the FI system. When you turn the key, the ECU runs the fuel pump for 1.5 seconds to pressurize the system. Turning the key to "start" also runs the fuel pump. If you have a leaky check valve or a leaky injector, you may be getting vapor formation in the line which causes the motor to die. Once you restart, it clears out the vapor and then the car runs fine. To check on this, attache a fuel pressure gauge to the CSV fuel rail tap on the driver's side. Turn the key to "on" to pressurize the system. Watch and see if it bleeds down rapidly. If so, pull your injectors and see if any are dripping. If not, it's probably your check valve in the fuel pump.
