Got the engine unstuck
 

I finally got the engine unstuck last night. It wasnt rust but just carboned up I guess. I pulled the heads off and tap tap on the pistons with a wooden malled and they moved. I just pulled the jugs off and they looked good! So off the cylinders go to a machine shop for a little honing. Any one know what the specs are for max bore dia? If they are worn pretty bad then I wont bother having them honed out. I'm going to have the heads done as well. The machine shop said normally that includes decarbonize the head, new guides, grind the seats and lap the valves and check the springs. Anything else? Oh this is a 72 1.7L

Check your heads carefully for cracks BEFORE THE SHOP DOES ANYTHING, and if the shop doesn't do a lot of work with VW or other alloy heads (like motorbikes)consider finding another shop. Ask if they heat the heads prior to installing guides or seats, or just press them in (bad). Shops who treat these like iron heads will damage them. (ask me how I know...) I've read that .010 crush for new valve seats is recommended as well, though the factory spec is less. If you are lucky Jake Raby will add his .02.
