Mounting engine on Stand for Rebuild

Greeting 914ers, I need some advice.

I just bought a new engine stand (750 # Capacity) from Cummins Tools for $30 (You couldn't make one for that price) and plan to mount my motor to it for a rebuild. Is it best to make an adapter to mount to the front of the motor (where the fan is), or to the rear (where the flywheel is)?

Anyone have a plan for the adapter ,or recommendation on which bolt holes to use?

I have rebuilt chevy V8's before but never a VW aircooled (1.8l)

Thanks all, and have a good weekend!

Rob... Go find a VW parts shop on the net or in your neighborhood.

Ask for a TYPE I engine stand yoke. The diameter of the yoke tube is pretty much universal.

The TYPE I Yoke will fit the type IV engine. They are cheap.. Like 40 bucks or less if you look real hard. Harbor freight has em for 24.00 bucks when available.

It will make your life MUCH easier....!!!!!
