Tranny rebuild questions
 

My clutch decided to 'grenade' 2 days ago and since I have the tranny out to do the repair I have decided to replace my 1st gear according to the article here on the site. 2 questions occured to me.

1. I want to replace the shift shaft seal (small leak) but am curious as to how to get at it. To pull it do I have to remove the roll pin that holds the shifter 'end piece' on. Or is there a more simple way?

2. I have the transmission out of the car and am not quite sure how to get the 30mm expansion nut off (the article has the tranny still in the car and uses the weight of the car and the p-brake to immobilize the transmission. Nor do I happen to have Porsche tool P37 handy.) Any suggestions?

Years ago, when I replaced the 1st gear synchro ring in my original 914, I took a piece of scrap steel, about 4 inches wide, and hammered it into a "U" shape, drilled a few holes, and bolted it to both axle flanges. The steel was fairly stout, about .125" to .187", I can't remember how long (enough to saddle underneath the trany}, and when torqing, it came to bear on the case. I think I had to sit on the case to immobilize it, while pushing or pulling on the breaker bar/socket. This was my Cheap SOB solution during a hot Georgia summer 23 years ago.

1.) Don´t know other way

2.) Engage two gears in one time so the trany is blocked.
