The bars that hold the rear trunk in the air have been pulled off the rollers. What the easyest (and safest) way to get that bar bak on the rollers?? would it be best to unbolt the bar then re clamp it?? orjust get a long bar and pry away at it?

Look in the tech section there is and article by good ol Coolie abou t making a tool to do it.
First replace the rollers with metal ones if you haven't. The Haynes manual shows a crow bar type of tool but man if those things slip you can really loose a finger!!! |

I have found that a small, deep socket attached to a socket extension gives you enough leverage to unload the torsion rods for the rear trunk. Then you can replace the rollers. Of course, a extra set of hands does help.

Welll the springs are already not against the rollers. i bought the car that way. I am waiting for my new rollers so i can pry the thing back on

When you're ready to replace the rollers, make sure the shaft is free of corrosion and lightly grease the shafts before sliding the new rollers on. Then use the deep socket (I believe I used either a 3/8 or 7/16 to pull the torsion rod back, install the new rollers and gently reposition the torsion rod on the roller.

For those of us who don't really care about orginality, can you just ditch those bars and rollers and put the PP gas shock system on instead? I'm at the stage of resto where this could be important...

Yup, just finished going through this project. You'll definately need a few strong hands(I worked w/ my step-dad). Check out the article and the tool in the tech section. You can pretty much figure it out from there. Good luck!

Eat-um-up, conversion is going along, slowly but surely. Pretty much everything from the doors forward is completed (except for body work), including the 911 suspension and brakes. The rear will get a set of BMW 320 calipers (they space perfectly over the 914-6 rotors) and most likely, a Wilwood park brake asmy. The engine and transaxle are about to be mated together this weekend.
When working with the torsion rods, just remember to keep body parts away from any area that they could get pinned into if the torsion rod slips off the tool. Eric |

Thanks. I knew I had seen the strut kit somewhere, but couldn't find it when I looked again. After reading your note, I just located the kit in Pelican, and will definitely order it. It seems to me that the price is well worth the loss of hassle dealing with a broken roller! Jim |
