Question Oil leaks

Just re-did the top end of my '70 1.7 L. New push rod tube gaskets included. I have a fair amount of oil leaking from a couple of tubes on the 1&2 head side. Heads were tourqed to spec. My neighbor says to use silicon gasket sealer. Any thoughts?

TIA,

John

The tubes have to be able to move a little due to heating and cooling. I use synthetic hi temp grease and coat the hi temp o-rings and the seating area very liberally before installing. It also helps to have the small spring wires to help hold the tubes in place although not absolutly necessary as my race engine has Pauter roller rockers and there is not enough room for the wires. Good luck

NO SILICONE!! it kills the aircooled engine..

WE have found that VITON seals work well with some teflon pipe thread paste applied conservatively on them, our engines often see a 30K service, dry as a bone...It is an acquired skill, on a type 4..

Since I haven't run the engin too much, is there the possibility that heating and cooling could seat the O-rings somewhat. It sounds like Jake,s method would require pulling the tubes out to get the VITON rings on.

Which size OD Vitons are you using Jake?

The VITONS we use are actually cut down units from hydraulic systems found on large Caterpillar dozers and loaders. These are tricky...

The normal VITONS are available from Pelican, and they are easier to work with. My method does require disassembly of the tubes from the engine, but it is the only way to seal it off correctly..

No Silicone ?? I just finished my 2.0L and sealed the push rod tubes with high temp silicone. What happens to it? Am I doomed?
I ran it on the ground before I take out a good running 1.8L and no leaks yet.
I also used it on the oil pump.. ayeeeeee
