Bumper question
 

Hi all,
well it looks like I'm gonna go for that 74. The PO has painted the bumpers black. I'm going to Pomona swapmeet tomorrow and was thinking about picking up some chrome bumpers(if I can find any). My question is: will bumpers from 70-73 fit on a 74 (they look very similar to me)? I don't really care for the rubber extensions.

FWIW I doubt the PO painted the bumpers black - chrome bumpers were an option.

Yes, swapping them for earlier ones should be a simple bolt-on proposition. The bumper guard thingies are just bolted to the bumpers on the 73-74 cars, and aren't really part of the "car".

However, be prepared to pay some non-trivial dollars for chrome bumpers in good shape. Even if you get *really* lucky, $100-125 ea is about the best you'll probably do. Super nice ones including the rubber cap piece can go for $300+.

As long as the bumper fits in my van, I'll haul it back. We may not have enough room with my 3.0 motor in the van as well.

If the car has the appearance group (vinyl on the sails, center console, etc.) it just might have chrome bumpers underneath the black paint. I had a '74 that I discovered had beautiful chrome under the matte black paint.

How would one safely remove paint from chrome without damaging the chrome? Paint remover?

I was at the POR-15 website and there POR-Strip said this, Quote "Remove any coating from any surface without damaging window glass, chrome, or weatherstrip. POR-STRIP ® is nonacidic and will not harm aluminum or factory fiberglass." That may be the ticket, I myself have never used it yet.
