Window Cranks? Is there a better one.

My window cranks are old and the plastic cover has separated from the rest of it.
I was wondering if any one has purchased a better unit or used one from another type of car that looks better and is sturdier?
Any pics would be grand too.
Thanks Tim.

the plastic cover is a press-fit. sometimes they pop off and can be persuaded to snap back on.

any early ('70s) vw-bug cranks will fit ...

You want a little variety, check this out

Midamerica Window Cranks

The street rod ones are kinda cool, bit expensive though

Thanks for the tips.
tried to get a pair off of ebay but then found out they were Empi which seems to be the stock every one carries. Street rods do look cool.
The spline that is goes on looks just like the ones off of any 60 or 70's cars I might try looking in a few american classic car mags to see if any of those look good. I'll let you know if I have any luck.

stole one off my 77bus. then picked one up at a swap meet and put the swapped one back on the van. they are pretty common should be able to pick up something that will work at your local parts store...

I got a pair of cranks from a BMW 320i. They fit perfect and looked a little better than the stock VW/914.

If you want the stock look, the 914 cranks are identicle to the VW Bug cranks and you can find these at a wrecking yard.

Vern would love to see what the 320i's window cranks look like.
I don't really care about authenticity as long as they are study and look nice.
going to hit parts heaven this weekend and possibly a place called High performance house? Anyone ever heard of them? I heard he specializes in 914s.

Yup, Rich specializes in 914 parts. Knows his stuff, too--really well! Very proud of his parts, though. EASY in Emeryville and PartsHeaven in Hayward are other local-ish options in the Bay Area.

Here are some photos of my 320i cranks that I took at lunch. There a bit dusty as the car has been in storage for a couple of months.

I use 911 window cranks - much more sturdy than the 914/VW cranks.

Not cheap, but you can get replacement covers and knobs to make an old pair look fresh.

goat 07-12-2007 02:53 PM

I must be getting old......
talked to al at partsheaven picked up tons of parts for both the 914 and the 911, but forgot about the window cranks!!! doh. Did get a set off of ebay but turns out they are Empi's. forgive me but they are taiwan built and out of cheap metal, so the search goeas on.....
If nothing comes up then the 911 handles will be next.
tidybouy,,,, I do like that setup. More later.

I think these are EMPI. I like the sturdy feel and look
