I have a 72 1.7 with a hot start problem. After it sits for a very short time after being warmed up (hot) and trying to start it, the starter turns the engine over but the engine doesn't fire up right away. It fires barely and starts very gradually, i'm talking you can hear a piston at a time for a second or two. It gradually idles up but still seems sluggish. Starter is know to be good and engine runs fine in general. Has anyone encountered this problem?? Sounds like a simple heat related problem as it is directly related to hot engine temperatures. I would greatly appreaciate any advice or ideas on what it might possibly be.
Thanks! Alex |

Sounds to me like the typical symptoms for vapour lock. Basically, your fuel lines, and especially your fuel pump, get warm enough so that bubbles are created in the fuel line and pump. This causes the engine to not get enough fuel when running. The general fix for this is to relocate the fuel pump to the front, underneath the fuel tank and above the steering rack skid plate. It is kind of easy and kind of not.

Check your valve adjustment! [always set them with a cold engine] Ed
