What Kind of Primer to Use on 914
 

I have a 914 I am going to strip and paint . Is there a product that you can primer the car with that will smoothe out some of the rough spots . I was curious about gel coat but I guess that is a pre fiber glas product . Thanks again

You can use a filler primer, it goes on thick and you have to sand it but
it will full small gaps ( less than 1/16").

I have been wondering this same question. I am getting ready to start stripping my 914 and getting it ready for paint. I plan on doing all the body work myself and then get it sprayed by a pro. When I talked to the guys at the place where I'll probably get it done they told me to check with them first to make sure I get a primer that is compatible with the paint that will be put on the car. When I have looked at primers they usually say something like "compatible with most paints" so I assume there is something to this.

So my question is there a certain primer that should be used to maintain this compatibility or does it really matter. I was thinking about using Gray Self Etching Primer from Eastwood once I get it all stripped to bare metal. Would that be a good choice or is there a better product out there?

Ask the guys who are going to paint the car. They'll tell you if the chemistry is compatible or not with whatever it is they are going to use on it.

As Dave mentioned check with the painter or the place where you are getting your paint....it just works when you use the same brand and line of paint products....

I'm doing my '70 car right now. I'm using PCL self etching over the bare metal/filler and then the PCL primer/sealer over that. It will require blocking and then re-priming before Glassurit 22 line single stage. The PCL is a catalyzed primer. It is thick and tough. It fills 40 or 80 grit sanding scratches and doesn't shrink like uncatalyzed primers. It leaves kind of an 'avocado peel' texture when sprayed...this requires blocking with a more course sand paper
(320) then re-priming before the final blocking (500) and top coats.
