recent acquisition of 914
Hello all!
I have struck a deal to obtain my very own 914! What can you tell me about it? here is the link for the pictures: http://community.webshots.com/user/spydermeister It comes with a 1.7 that has a bigger set of cylinders and jugs and the heads are flycut... I want to paint it yellow... I saw someone here with a yellow one with the battery in the trunk picture, and OH boY! it was a nice color! Can I have the paint code for it? (if you don't mind another one that color being out there)

It will take some time before it is ready for paint. How long has it been sitting? What did you pay for it?

It has been sitting for uhhh... hmm... at least 10 years. =o) I almost acquired it in 96 to go with the Orange one I had. I'm trading computer lessons for it. I teach a couple of old friends how Windows XP, their digital cameras, etc work, and I get the car. So basically I'm picking it up for doing something I would have done for a plate of cookies. Quote:
was close enough to Free. got more input than your 'compliment'?

The rust looks so complete and devastating that it might cost more than buying a nicer example.
I'll give you a plate of cookies if you fix it up. That would be an awesome save.

Take out your favorite craftsman screwdriver and stab the car like you were trying to murder it. If it turns out like a horror movie, you'll know.

Close to the rust and every where else. It will show where the rust is really bad. I think if you jumped up and down on the driver's seat, that car might break in half. Maybe I'm wrong. I'm no expert for sure.

If it turns out that you are right, that 4Runner I have pictured is up for sale or trade so I can get a good roller.

You guy's must really want a 914 to settle for those rust buckets.I'd look for something in better shape. What are the values of thes cars when finished?

what is the value of this engine setup that came with it? It is a 1.7 that has bigger pistons, the head was fly cut so it would all fit, etc. It was all done by someone out in CA about 12-15 years ago. There are zero miles on it. (it hasn't been assembled completely yet) What do I look for on it so we can come up with an answer to the value of this engine? There was over $2k of work and parts put into it so far.

It is probably a 1911cc motor with the same internals of a 1.7 but with bigger pistons. That is what I have. If it is that old, it probably isn't worth too much. If you could prove it would run, it would be worth much more.
Don't get too discouraged. See what you got first. How did the stabbing turn out?

Good grief!
I thought I had problems. I am new member of this community as well, I can say the 914 is a fun car. If you are getting her free, take it - even if you can't repair her (anything is repairable - given time and money), you could possible strip her for parts to restore another one in a better condition!? Go for it buddy! The only thing that stops us, is our own mindset (and sometimes the size of one's paycheque). But imagine the rewards, knowing you restored her from that condition - very satisfying, I would imagine. Ciao Pete |

The pics tell the story. Don't dump ANY money into that car.

You saw the pic of my 73 under the knife. In my neck of the woods a free 73 2.0 is worth some level of resto. So what if it took 10 years. In this case the end result is worth it. See if you can find a 'more desirable' model to start with. I never would have done this with my 72 1.7L Came out costing a little more than the price of a restored 73 2.0L. This way I know whats in it and when the paint bubbles I'm not going to be disappointed when it comes to finding whats under that paint bubble. I know, and it wont be filler! ![]() ![]() ![]()

The stabbing turned out somewhat decent. It seems that the jack points are shot, and the battery tray needs pulled. (the battery in the trunk option looks good to me). The engine shelf is solid, and so is the sheet metal behind the jack point.
I also found the registration in the window visor... it was for 11/79. It has 94k miles on the Odometer... and the interior is in great shape! well, except for the cracked dash. It has a fold down seat in the center that matches the seats. The seats are the button style, and I'll be needing to find some more of those buttons. I did do the jump up and down test, and it didn't break in half. In fact, it didn't really flex. The pictures mostly show the surface rust. that's only happened within the past couple of years, and will be taken care of within the next couple of months. The back turnk checks out okay; and I can't seem to get the front trunk open. Is there a tech article on this already? someone else already ask ow to break into the front trunk? any more tests to do? I'll be picking up the engine sometime this week.
