I recently purchased a 76 2.0L. The car recently had an engine rebuilt with higher compression 8.5:1 with euro piston and total seal rings. Overall the car runs very strong. Compression shows:
145 on cyl #1,2,3 and 152 on cyl #4. Here is the problem...once the car is warmed up and while driving, the car will intermitently (on deceleration and acceleration) blow out a large cloud of white smoke. When I pull the plug on cyl #4, I notice some oil on the plug. I have tried to replace all the plugs, and even replace the injector on cyl #4, but the same problem exist. I'm guessing that the #4 intake valve guide is bad, because when I did the compression test, I notice that there was oil on the test plug, which lead me to believe that it's the intake valve guide and not the exhaust valve guide. Does anyone have any suggestion on what the problem might be? I would greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

Sounds like a guide. If the guide is allowing oil into the #4 cylunder. It will account for the slightly higher compression on that jug since the oil provides for a better seal between the rings and cylinder wall. Typically when the guides start to wear it will be pretty even unless that particular guide was installed wrong or less than perfect when compared to the others. I just had my heads done when I had the engine apart for a new c/p set and the guides were a bit sloppy. There wasnt any one that was noticeably worse than the others. I figured for $4 each it was worth it since I had it all apart anyway. If you keep running it that way it's going to start carboning up that cylinder pretty bad. The carbon deposits in turn can glow and cause pre ignition
