Flywheel/Transmission Q's
Hey guys,
I am preparing to replace my rear main seal in my '74 2.0 L. I am planning on doing this while leaving the engine in. 1. Is there anything suprising I need to watch out for? 2. How terribly important is the flywheel crush washer and o-ring? 3. Do I have to buy a flywheel lock, or is there a more "ingenious" solution? Thanks for all your help. |

I read the tech article on clutch replacement when I did mine, also with just the tranny out. I believe they recommend the bolts and crush washer. Make sure the flywheel pilot bearing is there and in good shape. Mine was disintegrated, as were the felt and o-ring. I also replaced the tranny seal and the recommended clutch related parts. I made a flywheel lock out of a 1-1/2"long piece of u-channel with flat pieces (with clearance holes for the studs) welded to both ends.
![]() If you don't have a welder maybe you could use a 1/8" thick piece of steel and bend into a U, then cut slots on both ends and bend them over and drill holes. Ed

Everyone I talk to says to replace the flywheel bolts and crush washer.. I am preparing to do a complete (flywheel / pressure plate / clutch) job this winter.
