How can i tell if my '73 914 is a 2 liter or 1.7? It does not have an engine, or emblems. But it does have the swaybars and center console but doesn't have stock rims. Is there a way to tell by the VIN number?

If you still have FI, check the number of nuts that hold the intake to the head. If there are 3 than 2.0. If 4, then a 1.7
Not sure of the VIN IDs |

Look for factory sway bar mounts under the front fenders, you will see three holes and one larger hole.If these are there then it is more than likely a 2.0. Do you have the fuel pump or any of the FI componets? check the parts #'s as 1.7 and 2.0 use different parts. what is the VIN. Try PNA for a Cardex that will tell you for sure. Steve

I assume you mean whether or not it originally had a 2.0 -- with no engine in it, does it really matter? I do not know if any 1.7's came with appearance group options or not, but as Steve mentioned a cardex from PCNA ($30 plus a wait) will tell you about original equipment on your car.
