Post Does anyone know this car ?

I really want a 914 to rebuild into a long term keeper. This would be a total, down to the tub project 2-3 years worth. I know that I'll have $10 - $12k into a car valued at $7k. I've wanted one for 30 years.

I just saw this on E-Bay.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=593920891

Does anyone know of this car ? Seller say's they work at Tweeks for summer job. One would think if it was any good. Someone there would suck it up.

I've looked at couple $2k cars, pretty ugly. Looked at one $8k car. To nice to take apart.
I want to refresh everything that needs it. And strengthen the entire chassis.
I get kind of attached to my P-cars.

TIA for the help ....... I really want a white car if anyone knows of one.

I could be wrong, but I suspect that maybe unless you do 100% of the work yourself (i.e. body & paint as well as mechanicals), a full "nut and bolt" resto will cost you well over $10-12K. It sounds as if you're looking to build a "concours" quality car. Unless you are really itching for that 2-3 year project, it might be better to spend the ~$8-10K to buy a "nearly done" car and then finish it up to your taste. Just a thought...

Conrad, how "rusty" was the car to start with ? You do see some, "get this out here cars on Traderonline". But I would like "some" reusable parts. Ha Ha Ha

Mine will be a DIY job 100% ( excluding engine machine work ).

I'm going to build a rotisserie for working on the tub. So I can't see getting a real nice one, if I'm just going to take it apart.
Taking apart is what I'm looking forward too.
I know, I'm sick ........

Rust wise, is there any thing that can't be fixed ?

Are you going the "wax" all the knooks and cranny's to keep rust out.
I remember Roland talking about it.

I've always loved these cars. I just want the satisfaction of doings it myself, and the learning that goes with it.

Being that I'm here in Montana. Buying one is tough. I'm limited to Montana, Spokane & Boise. Nothing comes up. Can use my relatives in Portland/Vancouver. The ones we've looked at there are pretty tired.
I'm thinking of using Pelican's pre inspection service for LA cars ?????

TIA

Hi Guys:

Mine's a full nut and bolt resto here in Toronto, and I'll finish up in the 10-12K US range for sure including flares, gt stiffening, lots of welding, BBS wheels, reupholstery, SC front end, etc. Buying a parts car and going to Hershey helped keep the costs from going higher. It is taking about 1 year and I'm doing everything but the bodywork.
I should have bought a better car BUT the cost of finding one, shipping it, getting it into Canada etc... could have bumped me close to that figure anyway. I know every nook and cranny of this car, and it is done to my specs from a bare shell up which is important to me.
Cary, rust details in the pics.

Thanks for the encouragement, Dave.

I do think I'll end up with a 2.7 in mine in the long run. But that's after the car grows on me.

I do think I'll be taking a bodywork and welding class to improve my skills.
But can get help if I need it. Both welding and bodywork.

Thanks ........

So I'm buying this 74 2.0 that runs, but, doesn't. No power is getting to the tranny. But I'm not right away plannign on doing a "rip it all apart and start over" resto. I plan in dropping the motor and suspension to fix all rust. And then makign it run, you know. Am I wrong? My budget is about 3-4K into it. And I think I've budgeted that in what it needs.

I have located close to 30 914s for rennlist and PCA members for the last seven years. I just found a perfect 72 that was an 8.5 on a scale of 1-10.....

Mike Ginter from Denver flew out and is driving it home as we speak. He paid $3700 dollars......

I have also shipped non running, non rusty cars back east as well. Shipping runs anywhere from 800-1500 depending on how far and whether it is an enclosed or open trailer or how fast you need it.

If you need help finding a car let me know. I am not a dealer, just a 914 nut....

Thanks Mike. May take you up on that. My delivery will be on the high side. I live south of Missoula. Close to the edge of the earth, when it comes to shipping.

How much would not running save me ?
It's coming apart anyway. I want to freshen everything.

I want thank everyone that's responded. Both, here on the board and by e-mail.
I'm encouraged. I will find something.

Cary,

I'm in Boise. If you hear about a car in this area, I'd be glad to check it out & send digital pics to you. They seem to pop up in the local paper (www.idahostatesman.com) every couple of months. Boise cars are nice because the climate is arid & roads aren't salted on the 2-3 days it snows each year.

cars.com is a resource you might consider in your search. Choose the option to "search for cars 1982 and older."

Good luck!

Mark
