Unhappy Mystery Wires!

I know this is going to be hard to answer, but someone must be the genius i am looking for!

I have a '74 1.8l... In the engine compartment, there are 3 bare wires that go nowhere... let me lay it out...

If you are standing on the pass side of the car with the engine compartment open.. These three white wires come out of the large gray wire loom at the rear end of the compartment. They are in their own smaller gray wire loom. they are lying in between the battery shelf and the engine. Again, three white wires in the original gray sleeve. Bare ends... I have no idea what they are for! (side note) Tach doesn't work...

Mike

Do you still have the fuel injection on the engine. Thats what it is for. It should have a plug on it.

I still have the original fuel injection on the engine, and all with the original plugs. Were you thinking it was for an injector?

This wire bundle is long enough to reach up to the coil and distributer area. It just runs up from the passenger side injector area.

White wires would be for the EFI. Three together in the right-rear doesn't ring a bell, though... Maybe grounds? Those would be at the rear crankcase seam, near the flywheel end on one of the through-bolts.

Not sure what else. You can ask Jeff Bowlsby, who sometimes hangs out here. You can also reach him through http://members.rennlist.com/914_wiring_harnesses . He probably has the best grasp of which wires branch out where on the various EFI wiring harnesses of anyone I know.

OK Mike; Here is my take on those 3 white wires. If they exit the harness at the same spot as the coil wire and the double relay wires (5-terminal plug), they will be for an optional altitude compensator which was used to lean the fuel mixture at high altitudes. Hope this helps, Al

Here is a link to my gmail photo site. Here you can see 2 pics of the wires in question. If it was for a compensator, should these just ne hanging in the case like that?

I checked out my 1.7 (that isn't in a car at the moment) and the wiring harness, and found a set of three wires, in a loom, like the ones pictured. They have a plug on the end, though... and they go to the distributor.
