Now, it's quite possible that I have a distorted view of the events that transpired, but you decide...
So, I'm coming home this evening and come up to a stoplight. A new Vette pulls up behind me. The light turns green and I get a quick jump off the line like I always like to do. This particular stretch of road goes from two lanes to three right after the intersection and continues on a gentle curve for about a 1/4 mile before the lanes go back to two again. I hear the Vette punch it and I already know what he's doing. Coming around on my left to prevent being stuck behind the lowly 914. Now, I must admit logic left me at that point. I'm nearing forty and I'm too old to do this type of stuff. But, why not? Already in second and a half a car length behind, I floored it and then grabbed third. At the apex of the curve, I'm even with the Vette. Hit fourth and I can hear him nailing it. But my baby is still staying even with him. Okay, so I knew I had a decision. Though technically I had the lane, I didn't want to force him into the divider when the lanes converged. More importantly, I knew the Vette would blow my doors off eventually and I could avoid a ticket by just standing down. So, I let off the throttle and let the Vette pass, smiled and waved as he blasted down the straightaway. Six months ago, I nearly sold her. Now, I'm really glad I didn't. I know the 914 in a serious race against a Vette or any number of sports cars is going to lose. But, isn't it just a ton of fun when you surprise somebody like that? Steve |

my turn...
it was about midnight when on my way home from a friends work i was doing about 60 mph past the baltimore inner harbor, when i heard a 5 inch pipe kick in from behind me, which turned out to be a chevy caviler all done up with graphics and ground effects decides he want to play so we cruise along at 60 ( he did catch me quick ) at the end of Pratt st for those who know is president st ( also called 83 ) i did the quick down shift 3rd... 2nd... and proceded to turn right at about 40 well this fool thought his car could do it too and after i pulled my head off the window ( i do need racing seat belts ) i looked in the mirror i saw this idiots car was on the curb not moving ( duel curb like steps about 2 feet high ) well i almost went back to make sure he was okay but i figured if he did not have the common sense to know what his car could do he might think it was my fault so if anybody sees a white with blue graphics in baltimore riding crocked or in the body shop you know why ------------------ scott thacher 75 1.8 on the road again 75 under rust (fine german rust) |

Burr, AKA Hare killer needs to tell this one... maybe he will chime in.
He was traveling down a road out here in southern california that he knew pretty well, and had two 'Merican rods tailgating him. The road ended in a "T", which he took at a good rate of speed in his teener... only to look in his rear view mirror to see the first car behind him, bouncing out into the field past the intersection.... and Burr is way to old for that kind of stuff... 914's... specializing in lateral G force techniques and maneuvers. Early in my 914 ownership, on a mountain road I knew very well, I drove some rice rocket motorcyles nuts when I got away from them coming down the mountain... finally at the bottom of the hill that emptied into a known speed trap area I backed way off and let them tear on down the last 1/4 mile to the free way while I kept to the speed limit... loads of fun even if I to am too old for that stuff. - Dave |
