Talking Things are lookin up!

Well, I determined that my 73 2.0 had a bad starter and a frozen enginne. I pulled the starter and jumped it (thanks Jared!) and it turned out that the starter spun, but the gear wasn't kicking out. New starter= $130.00 Beats the $400.00 price quote I received the other day from a shop! Anyways, I went to the store and bought a gallon of Marvel Mystery oil, and over a couple of days, I used most of that. Then I used some of that PB catalyst. Stuff just ate away the grit and rust. All the while, I was rocking the car in gear back and forth. Good news is that it is not stuck anymore 100% of the time. When I push it backwards and free it up, the engine turns over, but still wont start. Bad news is that it still gets stuck every now and then. My plan is to keep soaking it and loosining it up, until it will start, and then probably take it in to have the basics done. But hey, this is a huge step in the right direction, especially for me, who knows squat about cars. Thanks guys, you all really have educated me in the area of 914-ism. This one's for pops.

Do make sure you check the compression after all that. Mine was not noticeably siezed and it started after sitting for years, but the rings cracked in the process. Possibly this won't happen to yours because they are now so well-lubricated, but I wonder about the condition of the cylinder walls.

Cool

Not sure how you tried to start the car
but if the cylinders still hav a lot of Mavel in them and you have the plugs installed it will bind the engine. You have to clear the marvel from the cylinders before attempting to install the plugs and start the car. With marvel in the cylinder and the plugs installed the comppressed liquid will cause the engine to bind.. Thur the car over with no pkugs to pus out the marvel... Get a wet vac with a small tube attached and vaccum out the marvel...

Install new plugs and try to start

Good Luck

Yes, I got ahead of myself and installed new plugs and tried to start it. It didn't start, so I removed the plugs and saw that there was marvel oil on the plugs. I need to get a vaacum and suck it up, or let it dry up on its own. Like I said, it probably isn't ready to start, but when my dad was working on it, the internet wasn't around, so figuring out that your engine is frozen isn't thae first thing you thinkabout( at least in 1991). I am just glad I am one step closer to getting it up and running.
