Question Thermostat cable

I am installing new t'stat cable and want to know how far onto the thermostat you screw on the 10mm barrel nut (the piece that holds the cable)? The t'stat is fully collapsed.
The stat has a lot of threads on it. Does the nut get attached just on the end but securely or do you screw it on all the way? Depending on how far you screw it on would make a difference on how much cable length you have to play with where it attaches on the top of the engine.
If there is an article somewhere, could someone please direct me to it. Thanks.

I think you want to tighten it down all the way so it won't vibrate off. If there's not enough cable to grab onto after you screw it all the way on, you should get another cable.

Yep should screw in snugly. cable should have plenty of length to reach up to the flapper linkage arm.
