5 lug conversion
what parts are needed to go from 4 lug to 5 on a 914
|
For the front you need 911 struts and hubs. You can use 1970-1989 front struts/hubs. The 70-73 are mostly 3 inch spaced brake calipers while the 74 and up are 3.5 inch spacing, the later years allow larger calipers/rotors if you feel you need them. For the rear you need the 4 lug hubs converted to 5 lug via machining. Eric Shea on 914world offers this service along with others.

Front is easy. Just get a 911 front end. bolts in. I reccomend one with the underbody sway bar rather than the thru-body.
Rear is a bit more difficult. You'll need to have the wheel hubs drilled for the 5 lug pattern, then install new wheel bearings (you'll destroy the old ones getting the hubs out). use 914/6 rear rotors, (you'll have to do a little fitting with washers to offset the calipers to fit) The biggest tip, freeze the new bearings overnight, then heat up the suspension arms. If you do it right, the bearings will just slide in. |
On the sway bar issue... under vs through the body: Were they randomly placed in different vehicles, or were they year specific?
ie 19xx-19xx were under and 19xx-19xx were all through body ? or was it more of a random occurence between years and placement of sway bar? |
Early 911s (up through 73?) that had front sway bars had them through the body, like the 914 does. Later ones (definitely 78 and later) had them under-body.
There are aftermarket bars of both types. --DD |
