thermostat wire broken \ running hot

I just looked under the car because its running on the hot side and its cool out. I found the thermostat wire is just hanging, where does it go. Also on the bottom of the motor is a round plate with a wire comong out of it, is that where the temp sender goes?

OH, its a 74 914 1.8

The tstat cable goes up from the bellows then forward to the bar between the flaps at top/front of motor. When the cable is broken/disconnected, the flaps should default to full cooling position. Double check it... Grab the bracket on that bar where the cable is supposed to attach, rotate the bar (moving the flaps) then let go. There is supposed to be a spring which will make them snap back. If so, then your overheating problem is not because of the broken thermostat cable. If not, you need to lock the bar into full cooling position.

Yes, the round "taco" plate on the bottom of the motor is where the oil temp sensor wire connects.

Thanks for the info, I will check this today. Is the bar accessible from the top or bottom of the car?

The top, along the rear edge of the fan shroud.

loose fan belt will make a type I VW run hot, not a type IV. Fan on I is run by belt, fan on IV is not, it is on the end of the crank. Check your timing or for leaks on intake side if it is running hot. Turn idle screw, if nothing happens, likely air leak, leads to lean condition=hot running

I will try that, I found the belt loose and assumed it was driving the fan. I also need to install gauges(oil pressure and oil temp \ head temp) to see whats going on.

turned out not to be running hot, the po installed a temp sender that goes under the spark plug which measures cyl head temp and wired it into the stock gauge that measures oil temp, so the reading shows higher than it should
