Remove FI or not...?
 
Hi there
I am having a little trouble with the my 2.0 running rich. It is not the pressure sensor but I have a carb setup that I can install and hopefully end my problems with the fuel injection and have a solid daily driver.
My question is this (well more like a dilema) should I make the switch or continue to pump $$ into the FI system. I don't know what kind I have only that it causes great deals of pain everytime I have to dig into my wallet.
Does anybody know the law in regards to smog exemptions? I know the 73's don't need to be smoged. 74?

If you've got a 74 2.0 I believe you have a D-Jet. Also from other posts here, in CA a 74 will have to be smog legal until next year. IMOP, stay with the FI.

74 won't be smog-inspection exempt in CA until 2004. And that's if the gubmint weenies don't change the laws before then.

IMHO going to carbs to achieve a better daily driver is an oxymoron. Carbs are always a compromise solution and will not work well for you without also changing the cam and a bunch of other fiddling. You have to redo the fuel pump, throttle linkage, etc. Fine for a race car, but a step backwards for a stock 2.0 street car in my opinion.

The 74 can be made to pass...fiddling with fuel pressure and the adjustment screw on the brain usually works....it depends on where you are running rich? Idle or at 2500 rpms?

The brain adjustment only works at idle....loosening the valves can help at 2500 rpms. Adjustments are best done while on a scope and the engine HOT.....

I think the bottom line is, if you're in CA then you need to get the FI working properly. Go through the ignition system thoroughly, check for vacuum leaks of all kinds, make sure the fuel pressure is in spec, and then start checking the FI components.

How rich is rich? Under idle? Load? Do you have the numbers from a smog test for us to look at?

Thanks for responding guys.
My car passes smog the last year no problem. Then my car got this insatiable urge to rev to 3000 at stop signs and red lights. Then after a while it woke up one morning and stopped for about 4 months, now he's back!
Nobody fixed it the first time it "fixed" itself, now I have a possible solution, replace the demon that has a "brain" of its own!
This car is possessed!
I thought I would bring this car back to life, summer is winding down and I can drive with the top down and not have to use my 944's air conditioning anymore. Plus I am tired with dealing with some of the idiots on the 944 board (very few but they ruin the board none the less!!)

I've got a '71 914 with Webers (and the engine has been heavily breathed on) and agree with a lot of what's been said above about driveability, etc, but it definitely LOOKS better with the carbs. The sheet metal is powdercoated which really helps too. The engine compartment just looks so much cleaner with all those hoses, etc removed! Of course, with that said I'm restoring a '73 2.0 and will try to keep it original and get the FI to work... I don't think there is really a "right" answer.
