Any idea how to eliminate the steering shimmy in my '75 914? I've already rebuilt the steering column, replaced the steering rack, tie rod ends, ball joints, front & rear suspension bushings, front strut inserts, and, rear springs[B]![B]
I'm thinking of replacing all wheel bearings and rear shocks next. My new wheels are "Riviera" from American Eagle which a dealer told me don't fit exactly on the hubs, but with these being a popular choice, I don't see how they would be a problem. Any suggestions short of setting the car on fire and collecting insurance money!?? ![]() Thanks |

I would try swapping wheels/tires between back and front. Sometimes tire problems (more than just wheel balancing) can cause this, and it doesn't take long to rotate the wheels around and see if you notice a change.

When you have the wheels off take a look at the balancing weights.
Put the wheels with the most weight on the rear for starters. Next, depending on the age of the tires, check for out of round on both the tire and the rim(this can be done on the car). Jack the car up and see if the wheel and tire are true to each other and the hub. Wheels "Don't fit exactly on the hubs"? Do the wheels allow for the hub-centrics? Or do 75-76 have that?

If you have lowered your car at all, that may be the cause of the problem. Pelican Parts given a solution for this problem in their 914 Q&A section. Check it out- LINK

If the wheels are lug centric rather than hub centric, and it sounds as though that is the case, that would do it. On the fronts, there wheel should fit closely over the little bit of the rotor that protrudes. The '73 and later cars have this sort of front rotors.
