jack gusset and socket

Does any one have any experience and hepful suggestions on replacing the jack sockets and gussets on the rocker area? I have most of the old ones cut off and am pondering how to go about putting the replacemnet parts on with the limited access to the top of the gusset since the quater panel blocks access to this area. Is it best to cut part of the fender away and weld it back in? Sounds drastic. Any help would e greatly appreciated

I had to weld up in that area when I fixed my longitudal rust problems. I didn’t cut the quarter. Instead I “welded blind” if you will. The MIG’s wand was small to get way-way up there. Because of this challenge I only spot welded, which plenty strong.

Because the inside of the longitudinal is inaccessable for complete inspection behind where you want to weld, I woulcn't trust the new jack receptor to lift the car. Its much safer to use a floor jack with a piece of wood to distribute the weight. Cut the wood on a table saw to make a slot to fit over seam. Those little mini floor jacks lift high enough to change a tire and have far more contact with the ground. And the floor jack fits the 4 jack points pretty well w/o any wood.

I agree with you Milt, I don’t jack with the jack receptor; to many ”rust unknowns” there. When I replaced my longs I didn’t even bother welding in a jack receptor. Now I just use the jack triangle – which I know is solid because I replaced it too.

Thanks for the input guys. I had a feeling any welding at the top might have to be blind but thought I would ask those who have done it.
