Engine lid grille color.
 

The engine lid grille looks a little tired on my car ('75 2.0). Is this something that could be 'rattle-canned' with good results?

What finish of black was the original? Glossy, semi-, satin?

Also, same question on rockers and valences as long as I'm thinking of painting..

I would call it Semi-eggshell.
Will spray paint will ever get hard enough to stand a normal cleaning? Hmm..

The grill tends to have a lot of surface rust so I would give it a good sanding first. I tried a normal spray primer on it and I had to sand it all off because it created puddles of primer on the edges. I was able to use an engine primer (VHT). Engine primer goes on very thin and close to powder.

If you really want to do a spray can job
mist it as far back as you can. Of course someone will say only Wurth paints will do

The black is officially called 'satin' which is duller than semi-gloss, shinier than flat or matte. Look around, its not too hard to find, don't get semi-gloss.

I'm with Bowlsby. I have used Rustoleum Satin Finish with great results. They think that it's for steel and iron patio furniture (have pictures of patio chairs on the can) and it comes in forest green and black. I chose black. I also used this to touch up and paint the rockers, rear valance and front chin.

While painting car body panels seems faintly 'trailer park custom' to me, it came out great, and I can touch up those highly vulnerable areas whenever I want.

Did you guys remove the grill to paint it?

Also, a few of my plastic chromed letters have spots where the chrome is bubbling up. Can you chrome paint these with good results?
