'70 914 1.7 won't start
 

Bought the '70 from a guy in Towson that runs a Muffler shop. He could start it with starter fluid but it didn't have enough fuel pressure to run. It needed tires and heat exchangers as well. So now it has the exhaust fixed, wheels and tires and fuel pump.

There is spark at the cyl., fuel at the cyl. and good compression but still won't start except on fluid. It is stock in configuration.

I can't say much more 'cause it is being repaired by the tech up there but he isn't familiar with early Bosch systems.

Any ideas?

FWIW he has tried partial and full pedal pressure w/o luck.

More info: it fires but won't catch.

You mentioned spark, fuel, and compression. Either something there is weak, or the timing is off.

Is the spark at the plugs strong, fat & blue? (vs. yellowish)

What is the fuel pressure?

Maybe pull the injector(s) out and put them in a jar to make sure they are spraying well. (Assuming still FI. Or does it have carbs?)

Do you smell gas?

I am simply giving info the mech gave me. He isn't familiar with d-jet but did check for the correct pressure on the pump.

Ok. Well I guess those questions are for the mech then. ;p

If the mech isn't familiar with Djet, I would be concerned.... He might recommend a carb conversion next.

Ask him what he says the correct pressure is. For Djet, it should be about 29lbs at the fuel rails (don't test at the pump).

check FI trigger points in Distributor, and and Cyl Head Temp sender.

Ground strap at the back of the transmission, on the top. Make sure it's connected to the body.

Bad fuel maybe. Is the fuel new? fuel looses its pop after so long.

Fuel is new.

Sounds like you're getting no fuel, or too little fuel. Check to make sure all of the wires for the EFI (white wires) are plugged in. Make sure the fuel pump runs; it should "buzz" for about 1.5 seconds when you turn the key from "off" to "on". Verify that you have 29 PSI fuel pressure downstream of the pump (but upstream of the fuel pressure regulator).
