Replacing engine mounts
 

Is there is trick to this? The top looks inaccessible, I can get a spanner or socket onto the nuts, but I couldn't turn it.

So what is the trick? Undo the bottom nuts in the cross member, lift the whole engine a few inches then turn the rubber mount against the stationary spanner? Doesn't sound great to me, but I can't think of a better way at the moment.

I assume this is the later style- rubber mounts toward the center, if so the rubber mount will not turn- it has a square shoulder into a square hole- you have to undo the nut on top. You may have to remove the blower housing (or at least move it slightly out of the way) for access. Or, you could try to remove the mount brackets from the engine (two bolts each side) and then remove the mount from the assembly.

IIRC, I removed the oil filter and got access to the top mounting nuts that way. Messy, with oil dripping onto my arm, but it did work. I was only able to move the 1/4" drive ratchet enough for one "click" of the mechanism, but it was enough to eventually remove the nut.

Not one of the more fun jobs on these cars.

you need to move the shroud ...

trust me, by the time you have fiddled your way to the bolts, you'd have dropped the engine twice.

you probably don't want to hear this, but it's soooo much easier to just drop the engine, remove the shroud, replace the mounts and bolt it back on.

you can do that in 2 hours easy ...

MMmmmm. Thanks. Maybe I'll leave the mounts until I've a reason to drop the engine. They don't look bad, I've only got the replacements as they were cheap and I thought an easy fix.
