Has anyone found a "doughnut" spare tire to fit a 914 (actually 911, I have 911 suspension on my 914, 5 lug)? I would love to free up some space, and maybe even move the spare to the back (if there is enough room to still put the top in there). Thanks for any advice.

Since your car is 5-lugged, I suspect you could use the collapsible spare from a (later) 911. That plus one of those little cigarette lighter compressors and you can save a fair amount of space.
Also FWIW a fullsize (stock-ish) spare wheel & tire does fit in the rear trunk already. That's what the threaded hole is for. I've never tried to put the top in too though, not sure about that... ------------------ Chris C. 73 914 2.0 70 911E Targa campbell.chris@gte.net |

Speaking of spare tires, where can I find the fastening hardware to bolt it to the trunk floor. Don't tell me P E L I C A N, I cannot find it anywhere in their catalog.

Have you tried the bracket used in the front? I was thinking maybe this would work but I haven't tried yet. If all els fails you could fab something up w/ parts from the front location and bolts from a hardware store. I do remember seeing a car in Excellence magazine (Tangarine 914/6-GT replica)w/ the space-saver spare in the trunk, looked mighty cool!

Yes, you're supposed to use the same hold-down thingie you use in the front trunk.
However, on my car I can't get the bolt to thread in all the way - I don't know if this is just due to bad threads or paint clogging them up, or maybe there really is supposed to be a shorter bolt thing for the rear. Oh, BTW - Wayne and the boys don't do a terribly job of conveying this, but (supposedly) the online catalog is only about 25-50% of the stuff they "carry". It never hurts to email or call. This type of item has got to be pretty common at junkyards and swapmeets though. I can't imagine it'd be more than a few bucks. FWIW I think the VW 412s and 411s held the spare down with the same plate and bolt (as I recall from my mom's car 20 some odd years ago,) might be able to track one of those down.
If it isn't going 'all the way in' I would suspect that either the threads are clogged or your spare is flipped upside down (which may be more likely.) The original tires were quite narrow and the spare was mounted 'outside-up' in the well. Most replacements were too wide for the bolt to reach the mount threads, so many people simply flipped the things over, but that made for too much bolt.
