Long block?

Seems like there's no end to what I don't know about these cars. I thought there were only three 4 cyl. motors: 1.7, 1.8 & 2.0. But recently I've seen the term "1.7l long block" pop up a couple of times. What exactly is this? A modification to a stock motor, or a factory variation on a more standard 1.7l, or what?

Thanks,

Mark

A "long block" is basically a bare stripped engine, with no induction or exhaust systems. But it is complete with the heads and other major stuff. Essentially a "plug and play" engine to swap into a car that already has the fuel injection/carbs and so forth.

FWIW a "short block" is a bare case with the crank, rods and pistons etc installed but no heads or induction/exhaust. It looks like an engine case with a bunch of studs and parts hanging off...
