Projekt 908 front end finished.. u'll luv or hate
Pretty new here Just like to share some photos of my 'projekt 908' which i have been working on for a year or so. I started with a basket case 914 with a standard 2.7 conversion, that had been languishing under it's PO. I had the desire to create something unique and personal, and learn how to be a better welder and fiberglass worker in the meantime. I have always thought the 914 could look must better with a little tweaking... namely a lower roofline and better front end. The 908's front end was always so simple and classic, that it seemed a natural.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1204405678.jpg

Finished (almost!)

lets see more shots of the chopped top. How did you get the top to fit, windshiels?
|
The 'chopped' top was done by taking measurement of me in the car with my helmet on, and seeing what we could get away with, even though i will be tracking with the roof off. We were originally going to chop the roof and just drop it 1.5 inches all the way around, and re-weld. however, it changed all the widths and angle, so for the rear, we shaped a piece of sheet steel at the local machine shop to the correct 'bend' and welded to a second piece. You can kind of tell from the pix. In the front, we mad cuts to the windshield frame about 4" above the junction with the body, chopped to correct height, then re-welded back over a central 'sleeve' of metal in the hollow interior of the frame. This adds needed strength. The windshield was made by making a tempate of the 'new' windshield area in cardboard, and taking it to a local boat shop, where they cut a perfect piece out of 1/4" laminated plexiglass. The fit is perfect, and will be held in place by screwed in clips similar to seen on RSRs. The new side window were done in the same way, using patterns, and the will be held up with cloth straps in fabricated runners. The cool thing about this project for me is the problems solving of fabrication and coming up with solutions on you own. I am aiming come as close with my little project to the 'pure porsche experience' that was known to the elford, muller, rodriguez and other strapped into their 906/8's with nothing but straight exhaust, air intakes and a cooling fan behind to provide the music.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1204485022.jpg
|
ps. we are having to cut the existing targa top to fit, but will eventually make a complete fiberglass one. Will send more pix of the weld sites, etch of the top when get a chance
|
Can you show me hoe your tall velocity stacks protrude from engine bay?
|
Hey retro, these are standard 6" stacks which bolt onto the weber base plate. I custom made plates to fit these tops, so that i could fit a set of 908/3 (yes, DP still makes these in Germany) stack covers on themhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1204497103.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1204497165.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1204497187.jpg |
I am trying to figure out what you had to modify [rear bulkhead] for them to clear body, trunk, engine lid? So its strictly track, no air filters?
|
"RoboPorsche"
|
I tried to accomplish getting cool ambient air with this method. That is what Porches was trying to do, getting intake out of hot engine compartment. But I had to scarifice even air spacing above stacks. The rear were very close to my carbon intakes. So I would prefer to go straight up, but how much did you cut to do that?http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1204498193.jpg
|
I had to make cutouts on the rear hood so that when i hinged up would clear the air filter... see below pix of me making cuts. The middle shot from my previous post showing the 908/3 screen style stack filters is all that i am using. I will not be driving in rain, etc, mostly track and some road. Hope this clarifies.

Thanks. If you get a chance send me an over head of the carbs with plate & stacks mounted. Also when you get an engine lid on it.
Thanks again |
Retro, no prob. I am painting the car in the next week, prep work completion permitting (vintage silver metellic of course), so will post more photos then. Those CF intakes are pretty sweet looking.

That is one sweet 914 project! I saw this at 914world.com and follwed the link. I've been racin a 914 for just over a year and like it stockish, in underdog mode, but some day I want to get another one and go crazy like you are. PLEASE make some cool fins on the back!!! That is one of may favorite aspects of the 908 and some 917 designs, those old-school batman style fins on the back. I'd like to make em so you could mount a covert hortizontal wing in between them. 914 rear wings should be higher actually, the air flow in the rear is pretty messed up. Anyway, keep posting those pics. Here is one I took with my cell phone of a real 908/3 that showed up at a PCA autocross I was at last year. They payed some extra $$$$$$ and got unlimited runs to prep for Monterey Historics. None of us minded watching that thing over and over. The 908 is an awesome autocross car - took TTOD

Phase 2, twin turbo and wing?;) No telling where this project is going to go... just going to have fun and go fasthttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1204690921.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1204691098.jpg That's just nutz, seeing a 908/3 autocrossing! |
We'll, almost ready to paint. Aiming for this weekend, but i said that last weekend:D Painting is the easy part, just like laying fiberglass, it's the prep work that's the killer. Anyhooo, decided to intergrate the rocker panels into the rear, riveted flares... kinda a gt2 look. We'll see how it comes out. Anchored the front end on with a combo of expoxy to existing sheet metal, and a flange glued to the front lip and then bolted to the body. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1206450338.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1206450362.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1206450378.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1206450557.jpg Sorry about the quality of the photos... was late last night and all i had wuz my iphone. PS, if anyone is interested, my buddy and i are attempting a concurrent 'mini-project' I hit a deer in the 911 coming home from work the other night, crushing my hood and breaking the windshield, but not other damage (911 are tanks!!), so i took the hood off the carrera and made a fiberglass mold. Gonna lay up a carbon fiber hood on this mold: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1206450725.jpg Gonna vacume bag it.... too soon to post on the 911 board, but if it comes out good, will let you know. Think there's a market for cost-effective Carbon 911 hoods? If this one work, may do the same for the 914 hood, although my stock one is fairly light. |
I like it! If you need any 908/3 referance photos go to my Flickr page and look at the shots I took at Rennsport III.

thanks for all the great photos
|
Oh damn.... this build is wicked!!! I cant believe I'm just finding it now.
You sir know what your doing when it comes to molds, I wish I could do that. Is there a easy way to making a mold for a hood or do you need special equipment. Thanks and good luck with the painting.... oh and prep work for paint SUCKS heh,heh |
Thanks guys for the encouraging words. Herman, the only fiberglass skillz i started with before this project were the one is used to shape and glass my own surfboards... basically rudimentary. I read everything i could on composites and mold making, and realized that if you know how to work with expoxies and resins, the hard part is building the shape around which the mold is built. My machine shop guy knew a guy who designed boat hulls, so i asked if he would mind helping on the project. That was the toughes part in all this was the sheer hours it took to get the lines/ and proportions right and symmetrical. Laying up all the glass (glass and more glass) was the easy part. My friend had the old-world eye when in i came to making it perfect... no CAD here! Of course now that i have glassing down, i wanted to learn Carbon! Made a 'skinned' mold from my well-waxed hood, sprayed on PVA and gelcoat, then laid-up 6 layer of Glass... voila. Tools for all this? Lots of determination, and sandpaper!
|
Just when i thought the glassing was over...
Well, i had anticipated throwing at least a little paint this weekend, but as usual, didn't happen. Instead, i decided that the rocker panels weren't fitting quite right. To blend the rear GT flares i better, we cut the lower anterior portion off, then fabricated a piece of sheet fibeglass to fit the gap. We then rigged up a scaffold to hold each in place with the new rocker placement (see below)
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1206907323.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1206907394.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1206907469.jpg And, almost finished http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1206907538.jpg On the stock 914, the rocker are recessed slightly... even more so on this car, which had been hit in the past and poorly repaired, meaning that the rockers all off. I decided to bring the rocker 'out' a little and make them more 'vertical', which would allow the porsche script to looke more as it does on the project's inspiration, the 908/3. To do this, i fabicated an extension to the upper part of the rocker out of aluminum sheet, and riveted it to rocker. The gap in the rear was covered neatly with an 'L' shaped aluminum bend, which fit the gap nicely. This allow me to 'angle' the rocker more outward, for a really nice effect. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1206907761.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1206907845.jpg And, as is said during surgery when taking a break to look at your work, the admiration phase (hey, if i didn't get to paint, at least i got to mock up the decals http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1206907953.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1206907976.jpg |
Hey guys, it's been a while, but after weeks of sanding, bondo, sanding, thought i would share some prelim pix from first spray. The guy at the paint shop sold up the wrong clear coat, which 'flashed' to quickly causing a 'frost', so we gotta go back and sand it some more:mad: From late last night, again with shi$$y ipone camera... looks great to finally have some paint on. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1208962812.jpg

Congrats....
That color looks like Arctic silver, it must have been tough to choose a color for that baby. Do you have any photo shop pics of what its supposed to look like? |
Herman, thanks. It's actually classic Silver Metallic 936. As to what it's supposed to look like, hey, you'll just have to wait and see...I'm almost there.;)
Got the centerlock wheels painted tonight Primered, they looked like Afrika Corps Panzer wheels http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209016900.jpg Painted, finally starting to look like vintage 908 wheels. Pictured with machined nuts beside them http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209017023.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209017062.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209017105.jpg Are you finally starting to get the full effect? Gettin there:) |
Awesome work. Makes my eyes pull back into my head just thinking about the G forces.
|
Just dropped in from 914world.com to check out your car, and all I can say is WOW!
That's going to be one mean 914 when it's done! |
Clear coat done! The pix dont do justice, but the silver metallic looks great. hope to have some outside shotz next week. Got a LOT of detail work to do now, with windshield, side window, etc. Aiming to have her track ready in a couple of weekshttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209473016.jpg

we just lost a teener last week due to a carb fire. i'd hate to think what would have happened to the driver if he had been strapped into a racing seat right in front of the engine without a firewall inbetween ... just something to think about ... SmileWavy Andy PS: are you going to do something about that wide gap at the end of the front fenders? looks great from the front, but that gap is kinda ugly ... |
Test fit of wheels

Hmmm...
March 1st put together rad 914...check.... End of April drive home rad 934 clone...check... May 4...get back to 914....check.... Dood...:D |
LOL:D!
Hey, i like to stay busy!;) |
that is really nice. I would like to see some shots a little farther back from the car though when you get a chance. Nice work!

Very nice!!!
|
WOW!
Beautiful work! |
Thanks guys! You may not like all the lines, but when i started this project, my goal was to capture some of the look and feel of the early Porsche racers... the 907/908/910's, raw, yet beautiful with a supreme sense of purpose. The 914/6 seemed the perfect platform
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1210444363.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1210444430.jpg I will probably never own a 6 or 7 figure historic Porsche, but this is good enough for me, and a helluva lot more fun to create than just writing a check!:D The car has come to fruition from my mind's eye quite nicely, and i have taken elements and design cues from the early porsche racers to create the 'hot-rod' i wanted. I was able to take the car out several months ago before we started into the body work, and the sound and feel were phenomenal. I still have a million little trim details to do, but should have her on the road and track soon. Hope to do some hill climbs in her this fall after a lot of shakedown time. Here is a short clip of her running just before we started on the bodywork (i have adjusted the valves, replaced the cap/rotors/wires and tuned the webers since then, so she is sounding a lot smoother). Just a teaser that keeps me going to finish! http://youtube.com/watch?v=QqRPV3f4E64 |
Waooouh,
wonderful work ... I am happy for you, your car is fantastic, Iwait another pictures (on circuit) Yves _ from France |
