Primer? recomendations

So I'm going to strip my paint and prime fairly soon. But I'm not going to re-paint right away. Can someone tell me a good primer. I don't want the metal to rust under the primer. Krylon makes this "Rust Tough" enamel primer. But I need to call them to make sure its not pourous.\

I'd rather pay the extra cash and order some good stuff I can't get at the local AutoZone.

I don't think any primer you get in a spray can is going to be very effective and will, at some point need to be sanded and sealed again before you shoot real automotive paint over it. If you do use "good stuff" make sure it's made by the same manufacturer that you will be using for your finish coat, that way you'll know they are compatible.

you cannot use any rattle can primer with success. and if you plan on taking your car in for paint, no reputable painter will touch it this primer on it. not only will this cheap primer not seal and protect the bare metal, it won't lay down well. you should spray an epoxy primer to seal and then what's called a 2-k primer for block sanding and final prep.

There are some rattle can sprays that have the real stuff, but the atomized overspray (@80%) will endo up all over your car and interior and in the garage. Best to buy a compressor (new or used) and a spray gun that uses HVLP technology (something as good as or better than a Devilbiss Finish Line gun).

If you are spraying metal and have/had rust, then the metal should be etched with a metal prep or an etching primer. Painting a car is science and chemistry and attention to detail and TONS of prep work. Letting a car sit under primer is OK, but be aware that oil from your fingers, natural oxydation, air-borne microorganisms and other factors make a primered car harder to paint after about a week.
