Question Fuel tank is out, found some exterior rust....

Ok, got my fuel tank out and everything in the compartment looks real good. The tank actually look real good inside and out, except for....

Where the one felt pad on the drivers side touched the tank I've got rust on the tank. It was bubbled up a little, I actually thought it was old felt stuck to the tank at first. It is pitted but can't quite tell if it is rusted all the way through, since the spot in question is on the far side of the interior baffle.

I've wire wheeled the area and applied some rust preventative paint. I'm just not sure what I should do next? Get a new tank, patch this one or get that POR-15 tank kit for $50 bucks.

What do you think?

Well, after thinking about it some more, I'm going to bite the bullet and go with the POR-15 kit.

This whole exercise of replacing the old cloth braid fuel lines and removing the fuel tank was because of fuel smell. So it seems like a good idea right now.

I just won't be able to drive it for another week or so, I guess.... Hopefully the weather will stay nice a little longer here in the Pacific Northwest so I can drive it at least one more time before storing for the winter....

I did the Por-15 tank sealer on my '74 back in May. It was worth it!
It's a little messy but the end results are great. It took about 3 days to do the whole project. A hair dryer will speed things up a bit.

Best of luck

Did you do anything special to protect the bolt threads or the small inlet/outlet holes on the bottom of the tank?

I'm just wondering how the POR-15 tank sealer is going to coat this stuff.

It's on order...can't wait to get going.
