More side shift help

I posted this question on my other recent topic of side shift stuff. I was afraid of the other looking old and getting no looks so here it is again. When i put the shifter rod in it gets stuck in the tunnel. when i push it though it is pinned to the pan and i cant do a thing with it. so i cannot attatch the shifter itslef to the rod. It seems to bind somewhere in the center where you cant reach or see... anyone else doing a side shift conversion have this problem???
my car is a 72 and this stuff is all out of a 74. it has a new conversion bushing in it

I think the front engine mount is different between the side shifter and tail shifter linkages for the holes? DD can probably verify that I imagine. If I remember correctly you have to have the front rod in the hole in the mount to then feed it through the bushing. Try putting the front section of shift rod in first and have the tunnel inspection cover open and get someone to watch the front of the rod coming in. There could be something actually in the tunnel hitting it? Make sure it is going in right side up and it should go. You might want to try it without the bushing first and then pull it out and insert the bushing. Good luck.

I converted to a side shifter in my '72 and I seem to remember something similar to that happening to me. Like John says you do have to have the motor mount from the older car. I seem to remember that the motor mount interfered with lining that rod so it doesn't bind. I used a jack to hold the motor up and removed the entire mount. That allowed me to insert the rod and thread it through the tunnel. After that you can put the mount back on and should be able to proceed from that point.

Good Luck

now are you reffering to the mouts that you bolt the cross bar too?? right now im just working with the single rod that runs between the shifter (in the cab) though the tunel and just outside the firewall where the engine compartment is. ti seems to bind in between the inspection pannel and the heater lever. right where you cant really inspect the inside tunnel... otherwise im not sure what motor mount your reffering to. the engine is not in the car at the moment

The cross bar motor mount on the 73 and up motors is different. The sift bar passes thru a hole in the motor mount. You need to swap motor mounts and the bar....

right i have got all of that, but at this time im not dealing with that. Im only working with the front section of the linkage. just the piece that goes in the tunnel and to the shift handle. it seems to be hitting something in there where i cant see or reach. any one have that problem

Thanks

Not only do you need the 73+ motor mount bar, but also the mounting hardware. That includes the solid outer mounts, the rubber inner mounts, and the harware that fastens those inner mounts to the crankcase.

I was able to remove and replace the front shift rod of a side-shifter-converted 72 without moving the motor at all. Also without hitting anything inside the center tunnel. (Though the car had been converted and "hacked" a bit before I ever saw it.) I have no clue what the problem could be.

Well. since you don't currently have the motor in, that eliminates the mounting bar as the culprit. If I remember right, the bar has to pass through an 'eye' that is inside the tunnel. Take a mirror and flashlight and see if you can see that 'eye' You could also use that mirror and flashlight and a pal to feed the rod through. Maybe you can catch the rod in the act of defiance.

Good luck

Thats exactly what it was. The bar was not passing though the eye but instead deverting to some strange rout. Its in now andwonderful. Thanks for the help

Unbolt the seat belt bolt, if someone used a bolt longer than stock it will hit the shiftrod. Steve
