914/6 conversion- I added up the receipts today

I am converting a 1975 chassis into a /6. This has been a labor of love to keep me busy when I'm not driving the 911. I originally budgeted $10,000.00 to $11,000.00 as I'm doing virtually all the work myself. I have purchased a 3.0 engine, welded on GT flares, done 911 5 lug conversion front and rear, M calipers front and rear, chassis stiffening and on and on. Piece by piece I'm replacing parts that need to be replaced. I'm buying used when I can and have tried to be frugal. Well today I decided to add up my receipts to date and I'm just slightly over budget As of today I'm at $13,705.00 and still have more parts to purchase and she's not painted yet Fortunately I have a understanding wife So how crazy am I?

Going over..

I had estimated $$ and time for my V8 conversion..
Actuall, on the money side, I am within 10-15% of estimate. However, on the TIME (hours spent) I am like 100% over (The welding of steel flares + body work added about 80-100 hours - which is how kept cost down.)

But I guess you can think of it as having twice as much fun as originally planned

I am seriuously considering not counting how much my STi conversion is costing me. So far I have just acquired the swap and the GT flares, along with the 5 bolt conversion stuff (all of it, struts, brakes, Fuchs). I just don't want to know. I am doing it out of love for the little car and once I get in just a bit further (pulling my stock engine and tranny on Sunday) there will be no going back. I shouldn't even read threads like this. They scare me. You can call me an ostrich...

Me three.... I am just about finished tearing down my 2.7 for a rebuild. I've been debating all week about just keeping the 1.8 and stretching it to 1911 with a really good cam/heads and hoping for about 120 hp. The vision of 200hp in my teener keeps the dream alive, tho....

My budget

I'm almost ready to apply primer. The flairs are on and the body is ready. My planned budget is $35,000, but I know that number grows every time I see something else I want.

When I started on my 914 I figured I would put the equivalent of a new economy car in it. I'm probably at the new mid-sized car point now and headed to the entry-level luxury car range. And it's still on jack stands.

I now understand why I drink It's nice to see others enjoying the journey of restoration/hot rodding these little cars. I really like my 911 and she's setup great with a tight suspension and PMO carbs but the idea of the same engine in my 914 is very motivational I am hoping to have it running by end of year, but I'm willing to sacrifice the finish date to do all the upgrades right and as I can afford them.

Budget?! We don't need to show no stinking budjet!!!

It's funny this thread popped up. I start my week vacation dedicated to six conversion. It all depends on how crazy you want to go and what you start with.(is your car already 5-lug with 911 breaks?) I started with 11k without body work , flares and repaint. That's probably 5-7k itself with flares, wheels, tires and paint on the cheap side. I'm doing the work myself including welding and a little fabrication. I'm a tool maker so I could build everything myself but the car wouldn't be done for twenty years. It look like I'll hit my budget with a little to spare. Bought a used 87 3.2 for 6k,GHL stainless heat exchangers triad west muffler, Kennedy engineering clutch and adapter, Patrick motor sports wiring harness, DWdesign oil tank, Rich Johnson motor mount and engine tin from John on this board. I picked up an oil cooler, oil cooler shroud, 911 spindles, S calipers, trailing arm reinforcements and all new bushings, bearings and brake parts over the last 2 years. That's an extra $2k, probably. As you can see it depends on what kind of build you want to do and what's important to you. My car will have a low mileage motor, all new exhaust, suspension, brakes and clutch. At 3-5k miles a year it should give me a long time of fun. Until I weld flares on and paint. LOL

I just put all of my receipts in a box...I will never ever count them up! My most recent purchases (at least this is the justification I gave my wife..she knows my game!) were a set of steel flairs (because I was in a group buy and saved so much money) and I got a set of 911 rims/new tires with 930 turbo offsets for only 600 bucks that will fit right under those flares nicely. Look at all the money I saved! lol

I think she knows that yet another 5k is coming on body repaint (just painted mine 3 years ago from bare metal) for the few hundreds I saved on flairs and tires! LMAO

Between what I put in and what the PO already spent, at least the stuff he still had receipts for, I'm near 30K, and its just a 2.4 six. I'm happy though, mine is running and for me any six is better than a four.

What color is it? Owner said this was a 10 year old conversion. As you can tell from the 3 stickers from the California Melee, done by the guy who organized the replacement for the Alpine 500, he drives it.

Filled the holes for the side markers, the anal cleft where the front fender attaches to the body and the trim for sail panels. Pretty, sounded fantastic, smoked a little when he started it after sitting all night following a day of hard running. He needs a new starter too.

check out the way the trunk opens

this shot did not turn out as good as I would have liked

check out the cage, targa top fit too, had it rigged up in the back. Fit in trunk too, stock rear holders, but I did not really see how the front was, he hooked it down after it was mostly closed

Byron you're probably right on the cost, my initial stab at a budget was an uneducated one at best. I'm doing this conversion at my own pace as budget allows so it's not that big a deal. It keeps me out of the bars And I'm coming up on 30th wedding anniversary so I think she's keeping me around
