"Hang Time"

Hi Guys and Gals,

When driving my '72 1.7 it feels like the engine decelerates a bit too soon when going through the gears. It is to the point that when I shift from 1st to
2nd at around 3000 - 4000 rpm, 2nd gear crashes while engaging.

I know there's an adjustment on the deceleration unit. But before I noodle with it I wanted to get some real world advice on the adjustment.

Thanks in Advance.

Rick

Okee Dokee ...
The deceleration unit.
I know that my engine's RPM's are dropping a bit too fast when I take my foot off of the pedal.
Any advice on adjusting it?
Thanks in advance,
Rick

That reminds me of a sick joke.

Q: Why did the Leper fail his drivers test?
A: He left his foot on the accelerator.
Sorry

What about just using your right foot?

Could be that the decel valve is not the issue? Check to be sure it is installed correctly and functions. the decel valve if working correctly will slow down the decel rate, by adding air into the intake while decelerating.

Is your timing dead on? Idle speed correct?

If so and you are still crashing gears, how bout suspecting the synchros unless you are shifting really fast.

Thanks bowlsby,

Now that's a good reply. The decel works by adding air to the mixture. OK. Does that means that the adjustment screw on the decel adjusts the amount of air that is allowed to enter the mix? Funny questions, I know.

Then does that adjustment affect the idle? Evidently so.

It's all give and take isn't it.

Thanks,

Rick

Dude, you don't need to be messing with this. I know, my replies aren't good, but seriously.... Futzing with the valve to make it decel slower is silliness. My car doesn't even have a decel valve. It's not an issue. Use the throttle to control the rpms. Your gear crashing needs to be dealt with another way. Your clutch or synchros may need attention, but not your decel valve.

Do you have a stock flywheel by any chance?

Thanks Randy. I won't touch it ... yet. I'll check out the idle and timing.
The only time the gears will occasionally crash is when I go from 1st to 2nd at around 3500 RPM and only when the engine is warming up. It may be me.

And Jay, I do have a stock everything. Do you have an idea?

Thanks,

Rick

This is wacky. What does idle have to do with this? Is your idle rpm way out of whack???? Think about it. Too low? Still not an issue here.

Timing is critical of course... If you don't know your timing is within spec, then yes, get that done. But I don't yet see the correlation with the topic you started.

Don't worry about the flywheel!!! I suppose the thought is a lightweight flywheel would cause the engine to rev down quicker - but puhleeze.... This is not a race motor. Rick, don't worry about your flywheel!

Geez, this is spinning out of control.

Randy,
Thanks for your help. And you're right. Idle isn't the issue.
The 1.7 isn't a rocket ship (almost) but the car decelerates too quickly between 1st and 2nd. Beyond that, no prob. Runs like a Top!
I'm gonna check the timing.
Good call, Randy.
