914 / S2000 Starter button?
What do you guys think about installing a starter button out of a Honda S2000 in the dash of the 914?
http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate...s/s2kstart.jpg Only $40 bucks. I think it would fit right in and look nice. Too much crossbreeding? ShawnO 1975 914 [This message has been edited by ShawnO (edited 09-06-2001).] |
How tough would that be to wire up? Looks kindda cool. Has anyone seen the STOLA boxster in the new Excellence? It has a starter button too...granted it has a twin turbo boxster s motor too(440hp).

$40 bucks? I want one. Do I just go to my local Honda dealer? Do you have a part number.

rubber encased push start button.. 3.99 at kragen's.. i've got one in my car as a hot start button.. took about 10 minutes to wire up..
with a button like that, you still need the key in the car to start it up.. Jeff |
Nice car. I'm not a big red car fan but that's a real nice shade of red.
Here's the site I found the starter button at. http://www.handa-accessories.com/s2000.html ShawnO 1975 914 |
would be tight!!! But do you really need the key to start it up with? The only thing im worried about is my car being broken into and all they have to do is push a button?!?!

The button, in general, will only operate the starter motor. It doesn't send power to the FI, to the ignition, etc.
So yes, you still need the key. --DD ------------------ Pelican Parts 914 Tech Support A few pics of my car: http://www.pelicanparts.com/gallery/Dave_Darling |
How would you hook something like that up?

The trickest way would be to use the stock wiring and drill a hole in the dash or use the cigar lighter hole. It would also require pulling the plug from the back of the switch and unhook the yellow wire from terminal 50 and reconnect it to the outlet side of the push button. Use a very big wire and tap onto terminal X and then connect to the inlet side of the switch. This way the key has to be on before the push button would work. If you tap to the circuit board or a kill switch that may not be the case. I would recommend trying it for a time or two before putting it all back in the dash to make sure there are no arcs and sparks. Good luck.

Bee Jay - Car looks great!
John - Great idea on wiring! Jeff (oredith)- does that mean that your start button does not need a key to be engaged? Has anyone actually installed one that needs the key and the button pressed to start? If so maybe a tech article would be good. Thanks for any more ideas. Nathan |
i think it's *harder* to install it so that no key is needed.. my wiring requires a key in the car, turned to the "on" position before the car will actually start.. the button is basically a short on the starter.. kinda the same idea as the relay, but required less wiring..
Jeff |
Thanks Nathan and ShawnO. The switch looks just like the one that comes in the Aston Martin Vanquish. I think the Viper has one too. I'm calling tommorow to order mine. Maybe I can have it in by Ventura this weekend. I intend to leave the key start hooked up, but have the push start button wired to the starter relay. I leave my top off almost 24/7 so I have to leave the key needed to operate. I will keep everyone posted.

Hey, I just ordered it on line. It was only $32 plus about $4 bucks shipping. It should ship Tuesday.

Hey guys,
When I first saw the S2000 at the 2000 model year car shows, I ordered that part from Honda for my 912E. I was thinking the same thing; maintain the key use, just wire it into the starter circuit. I sent it back. The part is cheapo plastic and tacky when it's in your hand. If I could find a nice, polished alum and high-quality example I would do the job. But, the Honda part is pretty cheap. It might weigh three ounces. I'm not Honda bashing. I have a 94 DOHC del Sol that revs to 8300 RPM and I love it. But, the switch is not a quality part, IMHO. Regards, David |
Too late. They emailed me that the part shipped today. Hey, isn't light good with these cars? Maybe I can have it in by Saturdays meet in Ventura after all.

My $0.02...
Your question is "How to wire it" My car came with a hot start relay (Pelican Kit). Why a hot start relay? The wiring takes a heavy and high wattage load to crank the car. The relay kit sends the juice directly to the relay and starter while the stock wiring is used to simply "click" the hot start relay into position. This will help to preserve your wiring AND you can use a switch that is not super heavy duty since only the relay will be "clicked." My car also came with a start button. The ignition must be turned on, but the start button prevents wear on the contacts that are in the bottom of the key (inside the steering column). My switch is wired into the steering column support bracket (a 1/2" hole) and it is out of sight. There are two heavy duty copper stranded wires that run from the push button switch under the side sill plate, through the sound padding, into the engine compartment, under the relay board, over hill, over dale, etc... and down to the starter. One wire on each post. This jumper method is almost identical to how a mechanic would use a hand-held hot start button while working on an engine. My Honda "Engine Start" button just arrived. I like it. Dave Cardone was right, it is made of chromed abs plastic, but I liked it. One problem. It came with no diagram or instructions. The back end is a plug recepticle for a plug with five pins. I have no idea Which is which. I assume two for the light and two for power to the starter relay. Does anybody have a S2000 or S2000 wiring diagram. I will have to figure it out, but it won't be in by Saturday. It is about 3 1/2" long by the way. I plan to install it in the dash to the left of the steering wheel.

BeeJay--two words for you: "Continuity Tester".
Clip one lead on to one of the inputs, clip the tester's lead to another input. Listen for a "beeeeeep". (Or look for the light, whatever.) Press the button in, listen for "beeeep". Repeat. There are only 10 possible combinations (4+3+2+1)--it won't take as long as posting your query here... Or you could use an ohmmeter--the light bulb will show a finite resistance, as opposed to just about zero or infinite for the rest. --DD ------------------ Pelican Parts 914 Tech Support A few pics of my car: http://www.pelicanparts.com/gallery/Dave_Darling |
Bee Jay,
Do a yahoo search for a miata S2000 starter button. I was looking for resources when this topic came up and there is an article out there about a Miata w/ a S2000 starter button on it. It has instructions on how to install...also an e-mail. Check it out! http://www.miata.net/garage/pushstart/ Hope this helps...please post info you find on the 914 install when done http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/biggrin.gif Nathan ------------------ '73 2.0 914 |
Hi,
I don't like the idea of drilling holes in my otherwise original dashboard... ------------------ '74 Porsche 914 2.0l '90 VW Vanagon 1.7l Diesel |
Thanks Nathan. That's exactly what I needed. If I get off early tommorow like today and yesterday, maybe I'll get it in by Saturday. But I think we'll have a full day tommorow after two down days. I hope the whole nation is back to normal tommorow.
Bee Jay |
You can use the hole from the cigar lighter, but it may be a little large. You can make a washer to fit under the button flange so it won't fall into the dash. Good luck.
|
Aren't there some smaller holes already in the dash to the left of the cig lighter? You could bore those holes out and technically not be adding more holes. It would be "cooler" to have the button on the left of the steering column...to make up for the lack of key on that side as many other porsches have.
Nathan |
If you feel through the woven material on the dash, you will find that several holes already exist. I have a hole to the left of my cig lighter and several holes to the left of my ignition switch. If you have a /4, I bet there is a hole in the location of a /6 ignition switch.
|
OK. I started my starter button installation today. I made pretty good progress. There was no hole where the six key switch should have been, but I have a 73. Here is a list of steps taken:
1. disconnect battery (OK, I didn't really do this, but every body says to. 2. drop lower dash knee pad 3. Remove steering wheel. (yes you have to) 4. Remove light switches. (head, fog,& flashers) 5.Carefully peel back vinyl 6. Drill a small hole 1 3/4" to the right of the fog switch hole. 7.Using a 1 1/4" hole saw, drill a 1 1/4" hole. 8. Test fit starter button. 9. Called it a day, electrical connections tomorow. Bee Jay I will now attempt to attach a picture. It didn't take. I'll email the picture to Wayne or Dave. Bee Jay PS. Drop the fuse box before you drill [This message has been edited by Bee Jay (edited 09-19-2001).] |

I decided that "while I was in there", to replace the basket weave vinyl with faux leather like my door panels and center console I recovered. Pulling the lighter and vent trim out was a challenge, but with that done, I pulled the basket weave vinyl, and the metal plate behind it, out. To my surprise, there are two pre-drilled holes under the vinyl, one on each side of the lighter. What are these for? If I had known, I might have used one of them for the starter button. I put the recovered plate back in the car and replaced the lighter, vent trim and light switches. Looks real good. I didn't get to the starter switch. Maybe tonight, and for sure this weekend. Great to here it's coming along. Don't forget
to send pictures. ShawnO |
It's in.
The Miata installation article was very helpful. http://www.miata.net/garage/pushstart/ Without it, I would have had to do a Dave Darling Dance with an ohmeter. Since I have a Bosch relay back near the starter, I just wired the starter to the fuse box, ground, and the yellow wire comming from the ignition switch. You can either cut this wire, or do like I did. I spliced the starter button to the yellow wire. I can start the car with either the key or the button. The nicest thing about the button, if the car dies, you don't have to return the key all the way back to the off position to restart, just push the button if the key is on. I am very pleased. I will try to take and post a picture tomorow. Next weeks project: BMW front brakes |
