New Pertronix Ignitor only Firing on #4
 

New Pertronix Ignitor installed on a '72 914 1.7 FI hasn't run since.
Got it to idle by adjusting timing. Put a timing light on it to investigate lack of power and found that the only cylinder that's firing is #4.
New cap, New rotor & wiring seems OK.
Gap on Pertronix set, checked and rechecked.
Car ran fine before.
Ideas ?

There's a known issue with some Pertronix setups that the magnet ring is too tall, and it pushes the rotor upwards. That results in a number of strange behaviors. The typical solution is to take a Dremel to the magnet wheel or to the rotor to make some clearance. Check that yours isn't interfering.

Since this a forum for learning and sharing ... I'll have to be honest.
I assumed that the instructions in the Pertronix (California, USA) manual to set the air gap at .030 referred to INCHES ... Heck, I didn't know!
I reset the gap to .030 MM and the engine fired right up and runs strong.
No issues with the height of the rotor.
Funny that in all my correspondence with Pertronix it, that little detail was never mentioned.
(Of course, Yours Truly didn't ask either .... Duh!)

I had to shorten the rotor on a bug I installed that system on, seemed easier than messing with the other thing. Made a mark at base and ground it off with a bench grinder
