where to begin?

so. i have a new 1970 914. I have been told by the PO that it had some fuel injection problems, or maybe some spark plug problems or was it a fuel pump issue, he couldnt recall. I am planning on pulling the engine and converting to electric but before I do so I would like to put a little time into trying to get it running so i can make sure it drives straight, steers ok, handles ok etc.

problem 1. the key won't go into the ignition. ug. got a red one and a black one. neither works. neither will even go into the slot. I have the steering column assembly out, but how do i disassemble it? it seems like the universal joint should come off. how??

does anyone have a wiring diagram? for the '70 914?

problem 2. i disconnected the steering column electrical harness and shorted the starter. first time it clonked a little and heard what sounded like a contactor closing. it did not make any healthy starting sounds. successive tries only made the contactor click noise... again no cranking noises.

is it frozen up? it's been sitting for over 10 years. i wanted to try and push it in gear.

i slide it into first (down left) cant budge it. fine no emergency yet. i can only get it into R and 1. straight up and straight down do not result in gears. i end up in neutral. i start taking apart shift linkages they're all busted. i'll need a good tranny for the electric anyway so i'll order shift bushings.

until then, any ideas?

Heres a link to the wiring diagrams located here at Pelican. http://www.pelicanparts.com/914/914_electrical_diagrams.htm . As for the rest, I'm no help. Sorry. GL.

You could get a remote starter switch from harbor freight to see if the motor turns over. With no key, I'm not sure how you could hot wire the rest of the ignition system, but the internet probably knows...
