AA/PP comparison...

Fellow 914 geeks. I have a data to share.

On the 28th of last month I purchased about 50 bucks worth of the typical, small, instock stuff from pelican parts. The PP experience is the best. Period. The online system works and provides even the most critical buyer with order and shipping feedback and links. 7 days later...parts at the door. Weekend plans confirmed...Honey, I will be in the garage! On the same day I placed an order with the "Dr. in GA". Although I have a print out of the order and a confirmation number, I have yet to receive any email/phone call to confirm. Two emails to them have gone unanswered, and Mastercard has no record of the transaction and of course no parts...
Thanks PP. By the way PP, can you get those cool clear Italian lenses? For $39.50 a pair...internet purchase only...if so I will take a pair too.

Just more food for thought during your next 914 parts search...Support PP...this site and Co. rules...From the East Coast cheers.

I didn't even know that there were a such thing as clear lenses for teeners? Scratching head........you are kidding right?
Those would have to look crappy IMHO. We need
someone to make bootleg knock offs of the originals. Jeff Bowlsby would be the guy for that, the man of invention :-). He is killer with a F.I wiring harness......

norustscott 10-08-2001 05:49 PM

Actually, no I am not kidding...Check out the AA web site...home page..Weekly special...your choice of clear(Italian) amber(USA) amber/Clear(Euro)... Respect for Pelicans efforts presvents me from posting a link...

Any pair for $39.50 !

Because my car no longer has the "boat trailer" side marker lights, the clear/white opaque would be intresting. Especially on my white car Still. $39.50 a PAIR!!!!
Never the less..> I still have yet to heart anything regarding the Order...

Nope, the "Kl33r KoRn3rZ" are real factory items. They're Italian-spec front turn signal lenses. They're great if you're trying to make a "Fast and the Furious" 914. http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/wink.gif

I think the Italian-spec cars used standard European tail lenses, though.

I've corresponded with one guy who has a real Italian-spec 914 with very very few miles out on the East Coast somewhere.

Those lenses are probably in the same wharehouse the steel 914 flares are stored....NOWHERE except in the vacant mind of AA..........

On the AA vs PP information side.

When I was installing a CIS 3.0 into my 914, I asked if it was possible w/o cutting the trunk.

Wayne said yes and emailed me lots of jpg that he took of his car.

I asked Dr. George, and he said it was not possible unless I did some weird VW air box thing.

Of course Wayne was correct. http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif

Actually, I "accidentally" ordered a pair of white lenses from AA...

Refer back to a message thread earlier on this year... AA had the a special on their clear and European lenses:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/Forum2/HTML/003106.html

The reason I say "accidentally" is because I thought about ordering a pair from AA and even filled out the online order form, but never actually completed the transaction. Guess what? Within a couple of weeks a package from AA appeared on my doorstep and my credit card was dinged.

My car was white at the time, but it's now been restored silver (will post pics soon). If anyone's interested in buying the lenses off me.....

You know...Pelican lists the factory steel "GT" flares too. I wonder if they are truly available (quickly) on demand or not; however, I doubt Wayne would list them in the catalog if they were unobtainium.

Is the issue that AA was trying to peddle repro flares, and they never had them made?

They (AA) were taking deposits on the flares, and telling customers that they were tooling up to make them....never happened.

Dave at Pelican Parts 10-10-2001 08:34 AM

I think the flares are available right now. I know they were a few months back. Pelican managed to find some original parts in Europe, and had them sent out.

They may have all been sold off by now. If so, it wouldn't be the first time that an on-line catalog has "lagged" the real world. Then again, I'm pretty sure that the Sales guys will tell you up front if we don't have something in stock.

I hate to admit it but I too ordered some of the Clear Italian Lenses from AA for my 914. I finially have them on as of a month ago...after about 2 months of haggling w/ AA to get the parts. First off they sent me one lense...then it took me 1.5 months to get ahold of an actual person in their "customer service" dept. They explained that they sent me the wrong part...the factory part w/ the screws and screw-washer included, not the lense only like I supposedly ordered. So I had to send back the one lense w/ the screws and washers and they would ship me the two lenses. All of this was at my time and shipping expense, sheesh. Needless to say I will not work w/ AA ever again, I just wish PP had this part so I could have avoided them like the plague to begin with.

Nathan
PS: They actually look nice on my Ravenna car, got a compliament from my Porsche mechanic too. Then again since they are a factory peice I guess I am ok...and not RICE (or is it Krout http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/wink.gif )

Hey, bonus At this rate I will have them by Christmas!!!!

Dave at Pelican Parts 10-10-2001 12:48 PM

Just make sure you put blue bulbs in, so the cops pull you over every time they see you...

OK, OK--seriously, now. Get amber bulbs if you want to stay on the good side of the law. If they wanna get picky, they can bust you if the front turn signals are not amber. The bulb must be a dual-filament bulb, or you'll have zillions of electrical gremlins. Ask me how I know...

Sorry, but I see so much of the "kleer kornerZ" (and blue brake-lights???) crapola in the CRX groups I belong to, it gets to me after a while...

I hear ya Dave,
Without a doubt I put the dual filament amber bulbs in. I like the look of them at night and when the signal is on, a nice full yellow. I have told my brother to shoot me if he ever sees me w/ a blue-bulb-riced-up-fast-furious-coffecanexhaust-bigwinged car. BTW I still have my euro turn signals if I tire of the Italian ones http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/biggrin.gif I'm still a youngster and boys will be boys.

Nathan
PS:Aside from the Italian lens debate I think the main issue is to stay away from AA and support PP.

My wife is Italian...I told her I bought them for her... http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/wink.gif

Oh yea, Maryland is very classic car friendly...I have two classics with white turn signals...no problems. It was not until 1964 or so did the US DOT require amber.

In Maryland, if the vehical is 25 years or older there is no safty inspection required for registration...There is however driving limitations such as no more that 7500 miles a year etc. How do they verify? They don't! http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif
