I'm searching for a place to install a set of 6x9's, 4x6's and a 8" Sub. Where can you fit all these speakers??
4x6's at the bottom edge of the door near the feet--and I've seen pictures of 914's with Subs built into the passenger footrest (anyone have experience with this?). But the 6x9's? Where can they fit? |

I think the only other place would be behind the seats. And that's only if you don't mind not moving your seat. But if your tall that would rule that out. And even if it fits your seats are blocking the speakers. Good luck.

Arlen,
I just completed my restoration and I wanted to try something that I feel has worked out quite well. If you have a center console, you can locate the 6x9's vertically on each side. I did this with 6.5" diameter speakers because I have the AC under the dash. On the driver's side you have to keep the speaker toward the gauges but not too close, so that your foot doesn't snag the speaker. Also locate them as high as possible on the side of the console. On the passenger side you have plenty of space to play with. I am very happy with the results. I get plenty of sound when I want it - and surprisingly most of the sound stays in the car (read - I can play it load and not piss off adjacent traffic). Another possibility, if you're short like I am, is to build a custom enclose for behind the seats. I noticed that my driver's seat has almost 5" of space at the deepest point that could be used. A 6x9 angled forward could easily fit in that amount of space. You can read the details on my setup on my free Pelican Parts web site below. I use a speaker made by Pioneer. Its a 3 way box speaker with good sound through the whole spectrum. Well a least enough sound to fill up a 914.
I put them infront of the driver/passenger seats on the floor facing forwards. Here is a link to the site with a pic and info. http://www.pioneer-eur.com/products/car/ts-43en.htm I will try to get a pic of them in my car. |

Are that many speakers really necessary?
While I know zilch about car audio, I'm an audio enthusiast and I've always found that for the best sound quality, less is more. the 914 ain't exactly carnegie hall acoustics wise. I'd been thinking of a pair of speakers in the doors or footwell with a powered sub in the console area or - I like that idea- passenger footwell. At least you could attempt to balance the two channels, and hear both tweeters. Is it just an attempt to overcome the ambient noise? |

I just finished doing some stereo upgrades in my 72 914. I put some Clarion src5753 speakers in the STOCK location! They are packaged as mids and tweets, so you are getting better sound. To fit them in, I used tin snips to square the mounting plate and trim it down to fit. It took me about 15min. per speaker. I even used the stock mounting holes. I am very happy with the results. Now, I am working on installing a 8" sub somewhere.

I'm not sure how to fit a set of 6x9's, 4x6's and a 8" Sub into the 914's cabin other than using Conrad's idea of the 6x9" sitting in front of the seats on the floor. I have been happy w/ some 4x6" Infinity Kappa's in the stock location, a 6.5" Bazooka 150watt tube in front of the pass seat and a just completed custom "center cushion" that houses two up-firing 3.5" blau's. That way the highs go right to my ears and the mids and bass fill the cabin. Just an idea.

I used the foam piece in the passenger foot well to build a sub woofer that does not take away any interior room, and gives the passenger a nice foot massage. You don't even see it under your floor mats. You can see pictures of it here.

I would say don't bother with the 6x9's, and put in a set of component speakers in the doors. I put a 6" woofer with a 1.5" separate tweeter in the front part of the door panel with an amp installed in the front trunk mounted to the wall in front of the gas tank. It sounded great, the speakers are nice and close to you.

I did the install on jboy914's car and now actually own it. I agree with him! That car has awesome sound!
Just get yourself some very high quality 6.5's and tweets and a decent amp. It is a lot of money but you will save money on not buying so damn many speakers. Can I just say that it is nice to be able to hear you rmusic clearly with the top off at 80mph (or a little more)! Sean |
