914-6 help

I have a friend that is dying from cancer. I am trying to finish his car before it is to late. It is a race car, 914-4 converted to a -6. I believe that it is a 2.4l. We are using the trans that came with the 4 cylinder. my problem is with the clutch. I think it is a stock flywheel and pressure plat with a sack disk. The problem is that their is to much travel with the throw out bearing. we are not able to disengage the p,p, . They have put him on morphine and I am not getting good answers from him. Any help would be gratefully.

Thanks in advance,
Paul

If the flywheel was machined, then the clutch won't engage without spacing the ball stud inside the bell housing. Then you will get the clutch working.

good luck, and sorry to hear about your friend. You are a good man for doing this for him.

How's it going? You could also cross post on the 911 Technical BBS on this site. That gets a bit more traffic than this board (the 914 Technical BBS) and the guys over there (on the 911 BBS) are a great group with a wonderful collective heart.

You need an early flywheel (901). If you don't have it, the stock 2.2L clutch is 225 mm and a whole **** pile different than the /4. Flywheel, ring gear and the pressure plate release mechanism method is totally different. The stock 2.4L flywheel is flat. The starter ring gear bolts to the pressure plate housing and this assembly bolts to the flywheel. The clutch would be "pull the fingers to release".

The 901 flywheel or a Type 4 modified for 6 flywheel bolts is required to use the 215 mm clutch. It is dished and one piece.

I'm guessing on this one ... an image of the clutch flywheel assembly would really help.

thanks for the info, we got the clutch working last night by shimming the pivot point. That was the only thing that went right. Started it up and had one forward gear and 5 reverse gears. Steve had the trans pulled apart and rebuilt, I think that they put the ring gear on the wrong side of the pinion. We have been busting our asses trying to finish this car but she is fitting us all the way.

Sounds like that's exactly what happened. The real bummer is that you can't just pull the cover and flip it over to the other side. The whole ring and pinion set up will need to be done again or you run the risk of having it eat itself in fairly short order.

As was requested above, please add your location to your signature. Under the circumstances, I am willing to offer the services of my shop as a discounted rate(we are a Porsche vintage transaxle specialty shop), but if you are too far away, the freight will be too much to make it worth your while ...
